LakelyTHE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 14, 2005 Conservative groups have found common ground with the liberal American Civil Liberties Union in their opposition to the USA Patriot Act and pledge to wage a high-profile fight against it, claiming even its renewal is shrouded in secrecy.

I think that the government could have - and should have - been able to stop the terror attacks with the laws they had at the time.
I would not really have much problem, so long as tactics and powers such as this were used on that sort of criminals and terrorists... the problem I have is we cannot say who may be labeled as criminals TOMORROW. For all you know, something you do everyday, may be labeled as criminal tomorrow.
According to the movie, "Farenhype 9-11", which I rented this past weekend and is an excellent expose of the lefty phenomenon/human blimp known as 'Michael Moore', the Patriot Act prevented a terrorist from blowing up the Brooklyn Bridge about a year following 9-11-01.
For ex., I have a concealed carry permit. If a cop has probable cause, say I'm printing or he has a reasonable suspicion--wouldn't bother me at all to be frisked. But same thing with 'gangstas', swarthy young men, etc., but police don't want to confront criminals: they're dangerous!
They put your teat in a wringer at the airport, right? If it means a safe flight . . . hey, we're at war. If you don't like it, join the ACLU.
Some libs gave Sensenbrenner an "out" for his aborting the recent congress hearings on the PA.Perhaps he was too busy pushing his law (HR 1528) that would make it a felony not to be a drug snitch.

Would you mind of someone in Langley or Greenbelt goes through your internet history or library history to see if you are a child molester or drug dealer without cause?
Why? Is there any part of the Patriot Act that has been used to stop a terror attack? Or have they just used it on drug dealers and mafia types? And then if Hildebeast gets in she can use it against gun owners, smokers, and those who fail to recognize Her Greatness. Are you telling me that the government has also used the Patriot Act against drug dealers and mafia types? Oh, the horrors! Next thing you know, they will be using it against kidnappers, murderers, rapists, and child molesters.
It's always a bad idea to support a law you don't want your adversaries enforcing.
-Eric
I agree with you. I also hope that tyranny will be manifested in America to thunderous applause.
I think most conservatives realize we are at war. The PA is nothing compared to what happened during the WWII or the Civil War for that matter.
Drug dealers and mafia types are American citizens, imbued with certain protections of the Bill of Rights.
Until anti-Constitutionalists like you got done shredding the Bill of Rights, of course.
It's like having the boss looking over your shoulder, even though you are working hard, it still feels uncomfortable knowing someone is waiting for you to make a simple mistake... especially knowing the FBI can legally listen to all of your phone calls and read all of your e-mails. You may be friends with a terrorist and not even know it but the FBI could see it differently from a 3rd party perspective and haul you in for collaboration. Imagine the neighbors of those men arrested in Cali. No arrests have been made but then again we are not ruled by a liberal executive branch at this moment. Remember Waco, Ruby Ridge and Elian Gonzalez under that liberal executive branch of the 90's.
I think it is a regrettable consequence of the horrible moral values of the Democrats. They are driving their base into the Republican party, but those people still think like liberals. And of course that thought process is: how can the government get more involved?

In World War Two, we fought a finite enemy that was named: Japan, and Germany.
We didn't fight the CONCEPTS of the Blitzkreig or the Kamakazi.
Here, we are fighting the CONCEPT of terrorism, not a finite enemy that is named.
Thusly, this war has no chance of ever ending. They are asking us to give up our rights forever. No thank you.
But this isn't a problem that is specific to the Patriot Act. We don't get rid of the police or the FBI just because they might violate an innocent person's rights tomorrow, next week, or next year.
Why is the protection of arabs and muslims mentioned in the Patriot Act?
I don't think they have.
But they didn't, and maybe they didn't because they couldn't. But even if they could, the Patriot Act makes it even more likely that they can.

Were you thinking Star Wars when you typed this?
