VERBENA (AP) A huge Confederate battle flag flying over Interstate 65 north of Montgomery will become a permanent fixture, according to officials with the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The organization bought land on the side of the interstate near Verbena and put up the flag, which has been flying for several months above the tree lines from the top of a large pole, easily visible from the heavily traveled interstate.
Leonard Wilson, commander of the Alabama division of Sons of Confederate Veterans, said the flag will be dedicated in a ceremony at 5 p.m. on June 26.
The flag is located on a little more than half an acre of land just north of where Autauga County 68 crosses over the interstate, about six miles south of the Verbena exit.
"We put the flag up so people could see it," Wilson said. "We are showing off our heritage. The flag is part of our heritage."
Critics of Confederate flag displays say they are reminders of the slavery era and Alabama's racist past, and can damage Alabama's image when flown beside a busy interstate route to Gulf beaches.
Great research!
Well said, billnaz.
That's a perfectly acceptable diet in much of the Ohio Valley NORTH of the Ohio ~ 'cept for the black-eyed peas ~ navy beans are much better!
Most of that nonsense has been cleared up.
We have a church history that's quite interesting. This little Baptist church stood astride the Underground Railroad as it made its way through Southern Indiana.
The Grandson of the Governor of Massachusetts and the Daughter of the President of Harvard attended.
I seriously doubt these two actively supported any element of what might be termed the "black codes". On the other hand, they had some cousins who got arrested, prosecuted and convicted for violating the federal runaway slave laws.
They had other cousins who were among the first on the scene in Kansas.
One thing for sure is that whatever antipathy there had been among folks in Indiana toward the idea of crushing slavery, that changed quicly. There was massive unemployment in a collapsed economy in the late 1850s and jobs in the Union Army were highly welcome! There were cities to be burned and rebels to kill, and you got paid enough to send something back home so your family could live.
Thank you, stainlessbanner. Judging from some of the posts this morning, the South-bashers have run out of logical thought, and are resorting to personal attacks in violation of the posting rules. But that's all right. It's fun to watch ranting Yankees stomp their feet and get all red in the face.
It would appear that my tongue-in-cheek suggestion to breed the Yankees out of existence by seducing their women might just have some validity. Actually, seducing a Yankee woman isn't much of a challenge. After their years of exposure to Yankee men they are ready for a positive change.
And they quickly get hooked on our food! Thirty years ago my Yankee wife didn't know what catfish was. Now she loves catfish, barbeque, cornbread, and many other Southern delicacies. I'm still trying to get her to try grits and black-eyed peas.
To all you South-bashers, you don't HAVE to read my posts if they get you upset. You might be more comfortable over in your usual haunt, DUmmieland.
a copy of the letter was posted by a South Carolinian several months ago on another WBTS thread.
may i gently suggest that you go search for the copy & then come back here and tell all & sundry that you (as usual) have NO IDEA what you're prattling about AND that you are nothing more or less than a HATE-FILLED FOOL.
at that time, another poster said that JFK sent similar letters to all of the original 11 dixie states. (until the rise of the REVISIONISTS,almost NOBODY north or south in academia ever questioned that the WBTS was about freedom for dixie. when the TENS of THOUSANDS of damnyankee atrocities became widely known in the 1960s, the LEFT had to come up with an EXCUSE for what was done by the lincoln coven of CRIMINALS. "slavery was all" was that EXCUSE!)
you of course won't believe ANYTHING that disagrees with your STUPID & ARROGANT hatred/foolishness, born of KNOWING LIES from the LEFTIST/REVISIONISTS.

The first settlers were mostly from Kentucky, North Carolina, and other Southern states.
Everybody knows that. Most of those settlers were anti-slavery people. The ones coming from South Carolina did so pretty much as refugees since their anti-slavery beliefs made them very unpopular. In effect, Indiana became in its earliest settlement period the Northernmost Southern state.
They brought their law with them.
By the 1830s they began to get a lot of New Yorkers and Pennsylvanians. In the 1840s the Hungarians came to dig the canals. In the 1850s the Germans started showing up.
There was an economic Panic or Crash about 1858, the Republicans came to power, the South started a war, Indiana raised more troops proportionate to its population than any other state in the Union for the Union Army.
Do you have a problem here? You can look it all up on the net to find your own references.
What are you talking about? Benedict Arnold turned loyalist. It was Washington, etc., that were traitors to the British Empire.
mine didn't work out too well. she's back home (THANK GOODNESS!) in PA.
but i DO agree. yankee GRRRLS are easy to "spoil rotten", as "they aren't used to much". they mostly know northern "girlie men" & "sissies". (rotflmRao!)

Maybe if you had referred to her as something other than a hate-FILLED, lying, ignorant, damnyankee then it might have had a chance?
Wonder if Sheets Byrd plans to be at the flag dedication?
The south is still trying to fight that war.
By flying a flag they feel they are still waging the fight.
In Virginia any slave who was emancipated had 12 months in which to leave the state or else be sold back into slavery. In Mississippi the state Supreme Court ruled that a slave could not be manumitted under any circumstances. In Alabama a free black person had to prove their freedom on an annual basis and pay a fee to do so. The legal restrictions placed on free blacks in Alabama, and against manumission of slaves was the major reason why the free black population in that state declined from 1400 in 1840 to around 800 in 1860. And 80% of that 800 were mulatto. I suggest it doesn't get more stringent than that.
Good suggestion since the only thing I have learned from you so far is that;
1.) You can't back up any of your charges of "South Bashing" but are quite adept at "Yankee bashing" and,
2.) You think you are God's gift to "Yankee" women.
Overall, not a very informative discussion.
And allow me to give you a little tip.
The first image that comes to mind for most Americans when they hear the word "Yankee" is a baseball team from the Bronx. You're not insulting me in the least with the "damn Yankee" epitaphs since I'm a lifelong, die hard Pirates fan. (yes, sad, but their's always hope for next year.)
And again, for a newbe, you are very quick on telling long time freepers to go away.
I suppose there might be some who are still fighting The War or, as I prefer to call it, "The Late Unpleasantness" when they fly either the Stars and Bars or the Confederate Battle Flag.
For me, I know the war is over. As I wrote in an earlier post, my ancestors came home from that war and raised their children to be patriotic Americans. Since that time my family has shed blood in every war, wearing the uniform of the United States. I choose to fly the Confederate Battle Flag AND the Flag of the United States of America to honor every part of my heritage. If anyone has a problem with the way I honor those have gone before me, that's just tough.
you'll have LOTS of EX-Freepers to bash the southland with, like Whisky Papa, cvn76 , #3fan & a host of other HATE-FILLED, ignorant, damnedyankees.
you could also "improve your stock" here if you took the clue-LESS m.eSPINola, the RACIST with you, when you go.
