The first settlers were mostly from Kentucky, North Carolina, and other Southern states.
Everybody knows that. Most of those settlers were anti-slavery people. The ones coming from South Carolina did so pretty much as refugees since their anti-slavery beliefs made them very unpopular. In effect, Indiana became in its earliest settlement period the Northernmost Southern state.
They brought their law with them.
By the 1830s they began to get a lot of New Yorkers and Pennsylvanians. In the 1840s the Hungarians came to dig the canals. In the 1850s the Germans started showing up.
There was an economic Panic or Crash about 1858, the Republicans came to power, the South started a war, Indiana raised more troops proportionate to its population than any other state in the Union for the Union Army.
