'Mainstream'? These folks are in way over their heads
Baltimore Sun ^ | June 11, 2005 | Gregory Kane

IS JANICE Rogers Brown, the California Supreme Court justice who was just confirmed by the U.S. Senate to sit on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, more mainstream than the Congressional Black Caucus?

I'm sure the caucus wouldn't agree. It's members opposed Brown's nomination from the start. In 2003, Maryland's own Rep. Elijah Cummings, who was then CBC chairman, said that Brown was one of several of President Bush's nominees "who are out of the mainstream of America."

Brown's supporters noted that the last time her name appeared on a California ballot, she received 76 percent of the vote. Let's compare that with the elections that gave us Cummings and the other members of the CBC.

Brown's vote tally was statewide. California is not only the most populous state in the country, it's arguably the most racially, ethnically, religiously and politically diverse.

Cummings and most other CBC members hail from districts that are overwhelmingly black and Democratic. Only one was elected in statewide balloting. As for the rest, if their districts were as diverse as California, probably not one of them would have been elected PTA secretary, much less to Congress.

So who's really "out of the mainstream"? Brown with 76 percent of the vote of a highly populous and diverse state, or CBC members from districts that are, for all practical purposes, homogenous?

This reminds me of something interesting I observed last year. The majority of my coworkers who are Africian American who voted, voted republican. Values.

****Hasn't the American Civil Liberties Union - I think Cummings would agree it's a pretty mainstream organization - argued for the free-speech rights of Nazis, pornographers and those who desecrate religious icons? ******

Anyone who would argue that the ACLU is mainstream is out of the loop. Cummings and his friends in the CBC are all elected because of Gerrymandered districts and the only time they take a stance on anything is when it involves race. They are a racist joke. Should be called Black Congressional KKK.

Reasonable people can disagree on things such as whether employers have the right to hire and fire whom they please and whether property owners have the right to determine rents. (Is Judge Joseph H. H. Kaplan, who overturned a referendum of Baltimore voters that supported rent control in 1979, "out of the mainstream"?)

But it looks like today's Democrats are saying "there is only one definition of mainstream, and it's ours."

The idea around which liberalism coheres is that NOTHING actually matters but PR. Liberalism is simply whatever will make journalists look good, and induce journalists to make politicians and judges look good.

"Mainstream" is simply a code word for what journalists like.

An Excellent point! I hadn't thought of it that way, but I couldn't agree with you more.

What the cbc means, by the mainstream comment about Judge Brown, is that she is out of the mainstream of the 24% from Castro Street that voted against her.

Justice Brown quotes Ayn Rand and Friedrich Hayek! That is a whole lot better than her critics, whose intellectual development stopped when they read Marx in high school.

And for some of them, it was Groucho, not Karl. (Actually, they would have been better off.)

Rep. Cummings. The same one who bypassed the Constitution and appealed to the UN to monitor our elections.

If he were a white Republican, the MSM would have denounced him as a traitor.

God, deliver us!

Waters, Lee, Conyers, Jackson-Lee, Mckinny, Owens, Cummings and a multitude of other CBC members don't have in total the class that Condi Rice or Janice Rogers-Brown have in their little fingers!

I wholeheartedly agree but this "mainstream" debate tickles the heck outta me. As long as them traitorous, cowardly, race-baiting, bribe-taking, American-by-birth-but-third-worlders-by-action goofballs continue to think THEY'RE mainstreamers and you and I are aliens from Mars . . . we'll continue to pluck them off one by one at the polls until eventually we can turn on our own RINOS and REALLY make some progress in this great country of ours.

Sadly, the afore-mentioned "why walk a block when I can get a government paid limo for free and treat the chauffeur like my personal indentured servant with impunity" Sheila Jackson-Lee hails from my state -- a sliver of Houston we affectionately refer to as Beirut South. She skipped the line where God was handing out IQ's and she's living proof all abortions aren't successful.

Once we all understand that 75 Dum/commie/fascist/socialist is considered the mainstream (by the 75)vs oh let's say a million VOTERS, everything becomes clear.

The person who gave this speech is in MY mainstream. It's worth a read if you have the time. It really puts recent history in frighteningly good perspective.

From what I've read, Brown is to the right of the mainstream. Delightfully, wonderfully to the right of the mainstream.

Thing is, since when did "mainstream" become a requirement? What, they never appointed lefty judges? Ruth Bader Ginsburg is further to the left than Brown is to the right.

That's correct .. because abortion and gay marriage have been pushed by GWB - and it resonates with blacks who are Baptists - or Christians.

"She [Sheila Jackson-Lee] skipped the line where God was handing out IQ's and she's living proof all abortions aren't successful."

Speaking of aborted abortions, it was Maxine Waters who said "I have to march because my mother could not have an abortion" at a Pro-Abortion Rally on April 25, 2004.

My mom is a Democrat and every time she starts to criticize Republicans, I interrupt her and just say: "but Mom... Maxine Waters???"
