Iowa rep says he will introduce bill in weeks

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, called today for deploying the military to seal the borders against illegal immigration and stiff new financial penalties for employers who hire aliens.
"The destiny of America is going to be shaped a lot by immigration policy," said King, who said he will introduce legislation "in the next several weeks."
King said the measure he's pushing would put in place severe financial penalties for companies hiring illegal workers, ending the companies' ability to take deductions on wages and benefits for those workers.
"That will change the dynamic of this," said King. "That will slow the growth in this job magnet that's driving our illegal immigration."
King spoke during a taping of Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" program airing later this weekend.
"Immigration is the big sleeping issue that seems to be the subject that no one wanted to touch in the last presidential campaign, the subject that these presidential candidates don't want to touch, but it's something that Iowans and Americans want to have a national debate on," said King.
His bill, he said, would give "safe harbor" to companies that use Internet-based tracking systems to verify that workers are in the country legally.
"We need healthy immigration," said King. "We should go around the world and recruit the best people we can get. We just simply can't be the relief valve for all the poverty in the world."King said it would be a relatively simple task to seal the border by deploying military units for that task.
"Yes we can control the border, we can put more people on the border," said King. "Deploy our military to the border. That's great terrain to train to go to Iraq. You need to keep an army busy. We have National Guard people down there now, we can just put more there."
We don't need tent cities or detainees, we need to STOP them from CROSSING the border, otherwise they have all the rights of a citizen - just ask the aclu.
Soldiers with weapons and some additional training can do the grunt work of spotting and rounding up the vast majority of border crashers.
1000 average everyday citizens, many seniors, were able to spot and report with no training at all. Don't make this harder than it is. Line the troops up on the border, WITH WEAPONS. That will stop them from CROSSING.
Why does it have to be the military? Just give enough manpower to the Border Patrol and someone with the gonads to effectively run it.
The combat units in the NG are being regularly federalized and have been in the rotational hopper for IRAQ along with the Active Army.
With regard to your anecdote regarding the 3d AD and the 10th Light, you are only addressing climate and terrain. You totally ignore the nature of the mission.
I really do not give a crap if you sit on the border with a night scope and increase your body count each day.[Get out from behind your keyboard and do something]. But, you are not going to screw up the combat effectiveness of our Army.

Sorry to stray from current topic, there is a site that rates Senators/Congressmen etc on their immigration policies. I am so far pretty impressed with Missouri's Jim Talent and Gov Roy Blunt, I wanted to check that site but didn't bookmark. Do you/or anyone know it?

I have preached this issue for 45 years at my 5 year high school reunions. The first couple of reunions, I was treated like I was crazy. Now all the words I said years ago are coming back around.
The natural openness of Mid-westerners is going to bite them in the butt. These are not just individuals in poverty (by American standards- THE KEY TO WHOLE ISSUE). They are often criminals and worse.

Do you think the Army is stupid enough to send a unit out to dull its tactical skills before sending them into combat?
I certainly don't. I saw us do some dumb things during the 20 years I was in, but this isn't one of them.

Only part of the problem, sgtbono2002. Another really hairy part of the problem is that some Mexicans are shooting at our guys.

We're running training rotations of Regular, and Reserve troops in conjunction with anti-drug/anti-terror forces on our side.
And they're catching illegals.
Excellent point. The drug runners are at war with us, and we haven't acknowledged that yet.
