Much has been written about the need and desire of Felt's family to cash in on his 15 minutes of fame. I have no problem with this, but we're also hearing about how he is living in a converted garage at his daughter's house, and that she has taken care of him for 20 years. Before designating her for sainthood. I 'd like to point out that he has been receiving a federal pension all this time, and he retired at the top of the federal pay system I know very little about the federal system, but assume there are many here who can estimate what his salary was at the time he retired, and what his pension is, even assuming that he elected a reduced benefit option to provide a survivor benefitfor his wife.

Without seeing any signs of abuse, just knowing that somebody has taken care of their Father for 20 years is enough to accuse them of abuse? What has this world come to. Let me tell you, most people who take care of their parents in their own home do it out of an overwhelming sense of love. Maybe that money allows the woman to stay home with the family and take care of her Father too. So what? Would people here rather the man's money go to some "facility" than his own family? I don't get it.
What business is it of yours or ours what their arrangement is?
And they live longer too if they stay at home with family.

This doesn't cover so-called "long term care", but you also are going to be eligible for Medicare, and that tied in with a top quality HMO will get you something close to it ~ and you get to live at home ~ preferably with a ground floor entry!
If he's not competent to determine his options, then the system protects elders. Or do you not think that protections are necessary..BY+TW..I think you're having an over-reaction to my use of the word "abuse" I specifically said FINANCIAL abuse..in my text..though not in the headline...
You mentioned financial abuse... states vary on "enforcement" of the laws. For example, abandonment of an elderly Louisiana resident in the state of Tennessee doesn't guarantee arrest... because of state lines. To be payee of social security income (receiving and distributing SS for a person who can no longer do it for themselves) is monitored annually. Proving extortion of finances is a long legal battle. To be honest, you would be surprised at the ease and amount of "financial" abuse experienced by the elderly... seems to me because of how hard it is to prove.
My mother gets my fathers military retirement... retired AF officer. No monitoring occurs. Also, the "money" is not the only "assets". Who knows what the "family" is up to. All I know is... the story always went... deep throat's identity would be revealed when he died. Seems to me, that was "deep throats" wishes. This current revelation appears to be manufactured from "others."
If it's from Woodward, that's not to be trusted. I'd much prefer competent medical personnel telling us about it.
What is financial abuse? They take care of him, why shouldn't they have access to his money?

Even if this is true, SO WHAT? Maybe the guy didn't think he'd live to be 91 years old? If others are making money off him, why shouldn't he? I don't understand what is going on here. Why make this such a grotesque story. It's pretty simple, if you ask me.
Yes. You make far too many assumptions based on very few facts. He looks well-kept for a man of 91 years. I may not like what he did and I may not like what I hear or read about the supposedly greedy daughter, but I applaud her for the 20 years she has given as his caretaker. That is not an easy or selfish thing to do. She could have sent him off to a 'senior living' place or a nursing home to die of loneliness.
And that was my point...the daughter forced it out now..and rather than buying the argument that the family wanted to cash in..and there's nothing wrong with that per se...I was pointing out an obvious alternative theory..when he dies, they lose a substantial monthly income..which she has been enjoying for decades..

Oops..too much common sense for one post. It's easier for the crazies here to spin a yarn of abuse and neglect. Absolutely ridiculous. Why is it so outrageous for the family members to want to get a piece of the pie? I'm surprised they waited this long.
You hit the nail on the head by saying "to put our feelings about his story aside" and the fact that "Woodward and Bernstein have made a fortune off of this story for years." It is very expensive to take care of an elderly person with Alzheimer's. Especially if you get some help, which you need to do if you want to remain sane yourself. My father had Alzheimer's and my mother went through hell taking care of him until his death. I helped as much as I could, but I worked and had a family at the time.
I don't see myself doing what they are doing, but there is nothing illegal about it.
Come on...we don't know how much $$ he gets, nor the level of care they provide..there could be a huge gulf between the two..
