Much has been written about the need and desire of Felt's family to cash in on his 15 minutes of fame. I have no problem with this, but we're also hearing about how he is living in a converted garage at his daughter's house, and that she has taken care of him for 20 years. Before designating her for sainthood. I 'd like to point out that he has been receiving a federal pension all this time, and he retired at the top of the federal pay system I know very little about the federal system, but assume there are many here who can estimate what his salary was at the time he retired, and what his pension is, even assuming that he elected a reduced benefit option to provide a survivor benefitfor his wife.

But that assumes he's doing the directing.
Neapolitano was right when he said that this guy had the nerve to call Nixon as a witness in his trial for the Weatherman break-ins, and then the jury rejected Nixon's opinion that sometimes you had to go around the law, which is what Felt did as Deep Throat!

FYI..he's Jewish..I know this because in today's NY Post story on the Felt mater, there's a sidebar of a secret tape transcript between Nixon and Haldemenn..Haldemann tells Nixon that Felt wants to the the head of the FBI..Nxon asks what religion is Felt..Haldemann tells him Jewish..Nixon goes, Oh Christ, we can't put a Jew in there. If Felt believed that NIxon was an anti-semite, and that's why he was passed pover for the top job..it could explain why he acted and gave the info to Woodward..
Another thing that the judge pointed out was that the DAUGHTER has asked Woodward and Bernstein to share the money they've made.
She also asked Woodward to write a book with her daddy; when he refused, they went to People Magazine, demanding so much money that the guy who was going to write the article -- imagine how famous HE would have been -- told People to back off the story because they were so greedy.
Or, perhaps CA's many and multi-varied "domestic unions" laws covers this? I don't know what the Feds (in re pensions) are covering these days. "Domestic Unions" can define a number of "relationships".
I don't either, although he made a good case. I would like to have another legal opinion on it.

The more I think about this case, the madder I get. I am so mad at the press right now that it's a good thing I don't know anyone who is a reporter. Grrr.
This was probably coincidental since the jobs in the biggest law firms and accountancy operations were simply not open to Catholics. Best way to get ahead, and maybe even establish one's self for a political future was to become an FBI agent.
Hoover got some very good people at bargain basement prices.
We sometimes forget that until quite recently "fibbies" have been exceedingly respected. May be why we hold their mistakes against them so harshly.
Now, is Felt's religious preference relevant? Probably not ~ unless he was a Moslem perhaps ~ then I'd be surprised. These guys were all interchangeable cogs, and the most cynical careerists always had the best shots at moving up to be assistant directors.
The left didn't exist in its current form, neither did the right. So both labels are not applicable. I don't pity the guy, he had a nice long life.

The spritely 91-year-old stroke victim Mark Felt, who recently revealed his identity as the anonymous source behind the The Washington Post's Watergate scandal coverage, told reporters gathered outside of his home today that he still has all of his 'marbles' and therefore his story was worth 'a pile of money'.
The remarks seemed to be aimed at book publishers sceptical about whether Mr. Felt could still tell a compelling story, worthy of a $1 million advance, despite his frail condition.
As his daughter, Joan, waved her father's hand toward the assembled reporters, Mr. Felt said, in a strangley falsetto voice, "I'm a man of honor -- a true American hero. I deserve the money that Bob Woodward was going to get for revealing my identity."
Mr. Felt maintained a broad grin during his remarks, his lips not appearing to move.
Joan Felt, the faithful daughter at his side, said, "My father is not motivated by greed, but only by honor and duty to country."
She then gazed lovingly at Mr. Felt and said, "Isn't that right, Lambchop?"
This is Shiavo redux--people sticking their noses in personal family business. It's a new form of conservatism.
HR said he was not directly involved in John Dean's attempted bribery of the Cuban defendants (first people on trial - Jan 73), yet I saw him waiting in his old car on the circle in front of the Jefferson building while John was inside offering payments.

Now, was Felt an observant Jew or did he slip off with his subordinates to imbibe at the Arlington KofC?

This thing played out to a genocide in Cambodia and a genocide in Viet Nam conducted by the Communist victors.
I just can't help coloring my perspective on the whole business with those memories.
