GEORGE BUSH MAY GO DOWN AS THE WORST PREZ IN HISTORY
or
WHY IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE A REPUBLICAN TODAY
President George Bush has not distinguished himself by fighting for his judicial nominees. Indeed, the way he treated Miguel Estrada, he is arguably worse than the Democrats in the Senate.
Now seven Senators have made a deal to run the Senate, and they claim that it would be best for the President to get in his Presidential Yugo and drive down to the Senate Building carrying his hat in his hand to get his judicial nominees pre-approved.
If President George Bush accedes to this power grab, he will go down as the worst President in history.
The United States Senate gave up its legislative power to the federal courts; now the Senate proposes to usurp Presidential powers. Where is our Constitutional Republic in all this?
Previous Presidents have called Senators over to the White House and 'jawboned' them with political goodies to get them to support their agenda. George Bush, instead, called Ted Kennedy over to the White House and allowed him to write the Education Bill. Kennedy responded by saying that Bush had woefully underfunded education, and iced it by calling the President a murderer and a war criminal. Bush does not jawbone Olympia Snowe or Lincoln Chaffee; instead, he closes military bases in Trent Lott's Senatorial District.
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE A REPUBLICAN TODAY
It is impossible to be a Republican today because as a voter you send representatives to Washington who BETRAY you repeatedly. Even when the majority of the country votes for Republicans and traditional values, 'Republicans' tell us that it is important to let the minority rule the country, and traditional values are trashed.
I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN
Well, I used to be a Republican. I have been betrayed so many times I have lost count. The Republican Party of Florida re-districted me out of the Congressional District in West Orlando [where I live] and placed me in WEST JACKSONVILLE - nearly 100 miles away. There are three Congressional Districts in West Orlando, but I am assigned to West Jacksonville... a district so gerrymandered that some portions are only as wide as the center line in the middle of the highway.
There is no good reason for me to be a Republican; there is no good reason for me to vote any longer. All my votes, all my campaigning for traditional values, all my fighting against the Democratic oligarchy siezing power in this country has resulted in my own people disenfranchising me by gerrymandering me out of representation in Washington [Well, true, I have Bill Nelson... I remember Bill Nelson: about 1983 he said on local radio that Christians should not be allowed to vote since they are incapable of thinking for themselves, that they must be told how to think.]
Yep - that is what all my voting for 40 years has netted me.
If I voted for Joseph Stalin, at least I would get exactly what I expected. At least if the Democraps win, we know they will finalize the overthrow of the Constitution and set up their socialist tyrannical dictatorship. If that does not motivate Americans to do what is necessary to re-establish freedom, then what have I been fighting for anyway?

Republicans have been trying to get things done True story. Some years ago I hired a friend of a long time employee. He wouldn't apply himself, half the time he didn't show up to work, and we took our time with him, trained him, several times, had talks with him, over and over and then found out he stole some items and cheated us.
Needless to say I fired him. I had no choice. This is the same thing that happened to me with this party. I fired them some time ago. I had no choice.

Normally, I'm one of those who are ready to tee off on the Bush is the worst president threads.
I've never known a Free Republic without the daily waves of trolls, compliments of DU and the LibertyPost. Of course, I've only been here since 2002. So, please don't take it personally if the first few posters reflexively threw the switch on old sparky.
I can't really go both barrels on anyone who is disappointed with the GOP. I'm frankly a little depressed right now. This is shaping up to be one heck of a BOHICA week for conservatives.
First, we have Senator Voinovich, who has apparently been in a coma, regaining consciousness in the middle of a committee meeting, and declaring John Bolton as unfit to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. I'm wondering why a Johnny-come-lately, who couldn't even be bothered to attend the first two hearings, suddenly wakes up and thinks he's Jimmy Stewart? I can think of two possibilities: live boy or dead girl. And then the genius piously proclaims he wouldn't attempt to push his views on his colleagues...in a letter published in the New York Times. WTF?
Then we move on to what some here are actually proclaiming to a be "conservative victory". The GOP currently has 55 of 100 seats in the House of Lords, plus the Vice-President as the tiebreaker.
Every single one of these GOP Senators was elected during the tenure of this President. There are alot of things that George Bush didn't run on, that maybe he should have. The Border with Mexico is the 400 lb gorilla, and there are some others. But one issue he definitely ran on. Judges.
No Republican who shared a stage with the man last fall can have any doubt about that. Every Republican he stumped for can't possibly have missed that one. Judges.
So, here we are, only seven months later. The only remaining roadblock to his nominees, most of whom have been in the pipeline for years, thanks to that little elf of obstruction, Tommy Daschle, is a two year old Senate Rule put in place by said little elf.
Where is Tommy Daschle now? Not in the Senate. He got canned for obstructing the President's judicial nominees. And what do we need to overturn that rule?
50 out 55 GOP Senators.
Should be fairly easy, right? The President ran on judicial nominees. The Republicans campaigned on judicial nominees. Tom Dashcle got sent to K Street, thanks to judicial nominees.
So, the one time when the obvious course of action is to come on board with the team for the big win, what do seven of our nitwit Hamlets do? That's right, they stab Frist, Bush, and 45 or so GOP Senators who are worth a crap in the back, and cut a craven deal with the Donks. And what a deal it was. Seven nominees get tossed over the side in exchange for three, and a vague promise from the Donks about the penumbras and emanations of whatever the hell "extraordinary circumstances" are. And it won't matter, because these seven Knights of the Republic, Arlen Spector on days when Scottish Law applies, Chuck Hagel when he's doing his Joe Biden impression, and whoever Voinovich is on any given day, would easily give the Donks a straight majority when it comes to a "controversial" nominee.
"Conservative victory" my ass. The Conservative Senators sure don't seem to think we won some sort of victory.
The Worst President ever? No way. 20% of our GOP Senators are so befuddled every time a Donk holds up a shiny object, they can't even manage to vote for something they were all campaigning for seven months ago. He's a better man then me. I'd be vetoing every piece of legislation that had anything in it for any of these seven.
There has been some speculation that Bush has been misunderestimated, and that we're seeing another Rope-a-Dope. I'm something of an afficionado of the old Rovian Rope-a-Dope, and I'm just not seeing it. You shouldn't have to Rope-A-Dope your own party to get the routine appointment of judicial nominees accomplished.
Maybe the Donks really are stupid enough to turn this around for us. But it's not because of the GOP master plan.
Seven RINO opportunists blew that one up on the launchpad.
Thanks, guys. Three straight GOP victories in elections, in large part due to all of us rightwing "extremists" you Peers of the Realm constantly rail against, and this is how you choose to repay us. Hope that the fifteen minutes of fawning coverage from the NYTimes and Katie Couric is worth pissing away a historic opportunity for the GOP to start reversing the leftward slide of the courts.
And of course, that courageuous maverick, Lincoln Chaffee, just couldn't help himself. He had to give us that last little poke in the eye by casting his meaningless vote against today's nominee.
I don't know about the rest of you, but my problem isn't with the President, and it's not with the party. It's with our merry band of RINO parasites who are only there for us when it's time for us to write the checks for those campaign contributions.

Bob;
I don't blame you for being upset. Few Republicans have not been let down by a REpublican politician. But don't stop voting! If, for no other reason, it really pisses off liberals and that's ALWAYS a good thing. Personally, I stopped registering as a REpublican when they elected Dole to run against Clinton, but I still vote for them...even if they are too damn spineless to do what they say they'll do much of the time.
Good luck with all of the flames you're getting. You might want to put some aloe on that.

There are problems within all parties and especially the loons in third parties, but overall, it is Republicans that are moving in the right direction.
Democrats are horrible these days and all third parties do in the end is enable Democrats, so nobody likes them either except for the third party people themselves.

I agree. It's always lonely at the top. That's part of why the job is hard. You don't always know who/what to trust.
RE: the common purpose/goalThat is exactly why this whole filibuster mess is such a blow. Yeesh. I'm going to wait however and see how it plays out. It may be ugly...or it may work out. There is no way to know yet. As the president said on election day "It is what it is."
As far as leadership qualitiesPresident Bush is very politically savvy. I personally believe he's holding his cards pretty close to the chest on this one. I am still trying to figure Frist out. Hastert on the other hand has proved to be shockingly effective. I've been pleasantly surprised. And our grassroots organization is the best in the business.
Finally, if I had any say in it, McCain would be the one to fall by the wayside. ; ) Hopefully those that can do something about that, will.

You stand head and shoulders above many on this thread that are incapable of understanding it!There are a heckuva lot of Freepers far smarter than I am.
Unfortunately, there are a lot that, in my opinion, are more concerned with one-upping a liberal relative or neighbor, than doing what is right for our country.
In the past half-year or so I have seen Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley and Peggy Noonan maligned and ridiculed on this very site, and these were not isolated incidents.
Today they are celebrating a judges confirmation that should have taken place four years ago.

To me, it feels like a relationship with a loser who can't keep a job. And he just lost the fifth job he's had this year.
And he's telling me, "But this position's going to work out. I'll get big commission checks in no time at all!"
Like the Republicans say, "But this deal's going to work out. We'll get Bush's nominations through in no time at all!"
I'm just not buying it anymore.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE A REPUBLICAN TODAY No argument here, and the sentiment is growing. History will not be kind to GWBush and his cronies. I switched to the Constitution Party two years ago.
To: Bob Ireland
You're right in that Republican senators are weak and Bush has made some mistakes.....immigration and CFR to name a few but he will be a long way from the worst in history. He took an aggressive stance on WOT and taxes...good things.
However, should border sneakers or illegals get in and commit an act of terrorism way beyond 9-11 then Bush will rightly be faulted for not securing our borders and will go the way of Hoover in historical standing.
I hope not....for us and for him.
But like you....I would absolutely relish a party that was made up of resolute conservatives like DeLay for instance.
Something is very very wrong here.
I feel betrayed but it's not all W's fault.
