Newsweek and the Quran: The Muslim holy book isn't just a "bible." It's far more sacred than that.
The Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal ^ | May 21, 2005 | Kenneth L. Woodward

Three-and-a-half years after 9/11, you would think that we Americans would get it: Muslims take their religion very, very seriously. Now 17 people are dead, Afghanistan is on edge, and there are protests in Pakistan, our most vulnerable and valuable ally among Muslim states — in part, it seems, because of six words in a brief item in Newsweek magazine. The offending passage, a small but colorful detail in a story on the investigation of abuses at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, reads in full: "Among the previously unreported cases, sources tell Newsweek: interrogators, in an attempt to rattle suspects, flushed a Qur'an down a toilet."

This was not the first time a major news organization had reported allegations that copies of the Quran belonging to detainees had been desecrated in this fashion — the Washington Post, the BBC and the New York Times all got there first. For this reason, perhaps, my colleagues at Newsweek, where I spent 38 years as religion editor, did not foresee how this single example among others mentioned in the story might incite Islam's most rabid anti-Americans. Neither, apparently, did the Pentagon official who read the Newsweek story before it went to press — a precaution the Newsweek editors took — and made no objection to the passage.

I am in no position to pass judgment on my Newsweek colleagues, nor would I want to. Among them are highly sensitive editors who frequently caught errors in my own copy. My concern is that all Americans understand how deeply sacrilegious such an act as Newsweek described would be to Muslims, and why it is not like flushing pages from the Bible down the drain — as Keith Olbermann on MSNBC and other commentators have suggested.

It's funny how much they bitch about idols, yet here the *kill* over idoltry of a book.

The logical backwardness of islam is so absurd, I wish it would look in upon itself and simply self-destruct under its own banality.

It certainly should. All it contributes, and I mean *ALL IT CONTRIBUTES*, is mysery and destruction and irrational lunacy.

If there was a case for a global ban on any religion/idealogy/book, islam is it.

I suppose it'll, for now, have to be fought on a more localized scale however.

It's simply insane. The Western Liberals and their MSM flagbearers are more afraid of what they think the "Radical Right Christians" MIGHT do, while glossing over or excusing radical Muslims who are actually putting their plans in action.

"Muslims are given a pass on riots, murders and terrorism for any pretext."

The alliance between the liberal media and Islam is an obvious one. They both detest Christianity and Christians in general. And they would both like to see Christianity fall. End of story.

It's worse than that. Anti-christian is one thing. Who cares.

islam is anti-everything. Atheist, Hindu, Bhuddist.. Every infidel has a stake in this. Every single islamic person threatens the 4.8 billion non-islamics in the planet.

Christianity alone is not a target. *EVERYTHING* is.

Go screw yourself, Expatguy.

Welcome to Freerepublic.

I get a lot of comments like this - many in email and well - many even with threats concerning things I post on what my life is like living in an Islamic country and how as an "infidel" I am required to make sacrifices to my freedom in exchange for security.

I do my best to shrug it off. Many of the people such as yourself simple piss on the carpet and are not interested in any honest intellectual debate.

I have something to share and I do my best to do it. Why does that anger you so very much?

I'd like to request that the Admin Moderator please do not delete de Buillion's reply to me. Let it stand. Let him explain here why he feels the need to lash out.

"I am a dhimmi. I will admit this here before my fellow FReepers."

I have reread your post, and come to the conclusion that I may have previously misjudged you, and if I did , I apologize. After carefully re-reading your post, I am almost certain that I misread it, and hereby rescind my prior reply to you.

I get it just fine. The practitioners of the religion of peace are for the most part little more than fanatical savages bent on forcing their death cult on the rest of the world. After reading the self serving schemes interspersed with incoherent ramblings written by that little pervert Mohamed, I'd say that if the Newsweek article isn't true, It sure should be. Islam, it's not a religion. It's an induced mental disorder.

Mr. Kenneth L. Woodward get a clue.

Perhaps after your head is hacked off and placed on the back of your body, you just might get one.

Thank You de Buillion.

I've lived here for a long while. I think I have something to share by letting FReepers know what life is like living the life of a dhimmi - many perhaps have no idea - and I feel it is my duty to let them know.

Thousands of Westerners around the globe can perhaps tell you as well. People such as myself who cannot eat in public during the month of Ramadan - people who are considered in many respects less than human and yet we are treated with kindness and protection - as long as we don't step out of line.

It's not a religion, it's an insane murder cult. They literally worship a black rock, five times a day. They will cut off an infidel's head or blow up a bus full of children on the mere rumor that a koran was flushed.

Let me skip ahead a few years to the end game: We're going to find out, sooner or later,

If Abdul will pray, to a glowing crater.

With no due respect, shut your pie-hole. And, shove your concern up your other hole.

The unspoken difference in his comparisons of The Bible and The Koran is that he has no fear of reprisals if he desecrates The Bible.

Yeah, this defense of Islam from the same secular liberals who never tire of attacking Christianity.

MSM tactics: portray peaceful Christians as a threat to humanity itself, and, murdering Muslims as the "religion of peace."

The used koran Amazon dot com news this week makes me wonder if a collective psychotic breakdown could be induced across all of the islamic world, if pork-laden korans happened to be mailed out en masse?
