Newsweek and the Quran: The Muslim holy book isn't just a "bible." It's far more sacred than that.
The Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal ^ | May 21, 2005 | Kenneth L. Woodward

Posted on 05/20/2005 9:43:01 PM PDT by quidnunc

Three-and-a-half years after 9/11, you would think that we Americans would get it: Muslims take their religion very, very seriously. Now 17 people are dead, Afghanistan is on edge, and there are protests in Pakistan, our most vulnerable and valuable ally among Muslim states — in part, it seems, because of six words in a brief item in Newsweek magazine. The offending passage, a small but colorful detail in a story on the investigation of abuses at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, reads in full: "Among the previously unreported cases, sources tell Newsweek: interrogators, in an attempt to rattle suspects, flushed a Qur'an down a toilet."

This was not the first time a major news organization had reported allegations that copies of the Quran belonging to detainees had been desecrated in this fashion — the Washington Post, the BBC and the New York Times all got there first. For this reason, perhaps, my colleagues at Newsweek, where I spent 38 years as religion editor, did not foresee how this single example among others mentioned in the story might incite Islam's most rabid anti-Americans. Neither, apparently, did the Pentagon official who read the Newsweek story before it went to press — a precaution the Newsweek editors took — and made no objection to the passage.

I am in no position to pass judgment on my Newsweek colleagues, nor would I want to. Among them are highly sensitive editors who frequently caught errors in my own copy. My concern is that all Americans understand how deeply sacrilegious such an act as Newsweek described would be to Muslims, and why it is not like flushing pages from the Bible down the drain — as Keith Olbermann on MSNBC and other commentators have suggested.

Tough. Each time we bow to their ridiculous religious demands brings us one step closer to Dhimmitude. No thanks.

Maybe it's time for the Muslims to honor Western sensibilities for once....fat chance.

I'd still use it if the Charmin roll was empty.

And make a bed for the hogs with it, too.

I think Koran toilet paper might just be a best seller in this country.

Kenn, let's talk about the sacredness of the American Flag,
the symbol of Libery and Freedom, which we see burnt, and urinated on by these terrorist fanatics.

The Koran? I'm over it, piss on it.

Being such a highly sensitive news writer, you should realize that you have just offended millions of Christians.

Yeah, this defense of Islam from the same secular liberals who never tire of attacking Christianity. This lecture would be received better if our media liberals had greater appreciation for the religious views of the majority of the American people. Otherwise this is just more Barbara Streisand multi-cultural gibbish.

Do you really mean this, or is your reply intended for Kenneth L. Woodward?

So, TROP reacts to allegations of Koran desecration with violence and murder. Remember that the next time they claim Islam is a peaceful religion.

And none of their religious leaders are criticizing the violence either.

Fine then; lets ban the Koran, and burn all of the copies within our border. It is obvious that this belief system is incompatible with the level of tolerance that we promote within our country. Therefore it should be considered subversive and treated accordingly.

Muslims are like savages and barbaric. Never before in all of history have we honored such people. Our counry and the journalists are really behaving like dimwits. We act like we are chickens too afraid to fight with the devil, wild wild devils.

I am a dhimmi. I will admit this here before my fellow FReepers.

This weekend will be a series of posts on "Dhimmitude - And the Life of a Dhimmi" - stop by learn more of what you are in store for. This will all be from my first hand experience - what I go through on a daily basis from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep at night!

Learn how why that to accept Islam within your country requires that you sacrifice your freedom - stop by now and read how you are already losing it and don't even realize it.

Stop by now and see how in the fury over the Newsweek article that much of America missed the biggest story - the battle that we all collectively lost when our Secretary of State appeased and pleaded with our enemies that they might show us quarter - and then offered up our freedom in exchange for peace and security?

I urge you to read "Desecration of Freedom" and the other essays concerning the same.

Jeff Jacoby had an excellent article in the Boston Globe on the Muslim riots. Nowhere were they condemned in the MSM. Christians, Jews and Buddhists have their sacred symbols, holy places and artifacts defiled and destroyed--no riots. Muslims are given a pass on riots, murders and terrorism for any pretext.

"Neither, apparently, did the Pentagon official who read the Newsweek story before it went to press — a precaution the Newsweek editors took — and made no objection to the passage"

Seems like there is an endless flow of b.s. spewing from the lamestream media spigots. The Pentagon doesn't edit Newsweek articles, nor does Newsweek care a whit about Pentagon objections to their stories and news releases. In fact, the Pentagon begged the news media not to publish the Abu Graihab photos because our troops would receive the brunt of the Islamic backlash. And the media cared????
