Network blames the president for high gas prices and emphasizes government regulation and taxes over free-market solutions.
Though oil prices have fallen about 20 percent from their April peak, NBC hasnt let up in its scrutiny of the gasoline industry. The network aired a series during the week of May 16, 2005, called Pain at the Pump, which included the usual stories about people buying fewer SUVs and bemoaning gas prices above $2 per gallon. But it shifted into high gear on the May 19, 2005, Nightly News when Campbell Brown did a segment about blaming the president for high gas prices. .
Historically, it is the president who takes the blame for high gas prices, Brown said. Rather than educating the public about the real factors behind gas prices such as the way supply and demand affects pricing NBC showed interviews with individuals who pushed for government intervention, saying, Congress needs to do something, and This could be something that they could help us with here, right now. No free-market voices were included to tell these consumers what it would mean for the government to step in and regulate gas prices.
Instead, Brown continued the push for more government involvement, saying Democrats have yet to offer up an alternative solution to alleviate prices. Not until the end of the segment did she acknowledge that the real problem is a tough one to fix.

| FINDING DEAL$ ON GA$OLINE: |
It doesn't matter if they have fallen since April (5 cents a gallon here). Gas was about $1.39 five years ago. Now it is $2.55.
Gas goes up and then goes down. A lot of the media seem intent on comparing raw numbers and then ignoring that pesky thing called inflation.
Gas has fallen about 20% in a month or so.
We've gone to below $2 a gallon here.
Rather than educating the public about the real factors behind gas prices -- such as the way supply and demand affects pricing ...... OR speculators and 'hedge funds' driving up the price of oil kinda unnecessarily ...
$1.86 here - was about $2.40+ just a few weeks ago - it has been steadily declining.
'We've gone to below $2 a gallon here.'
My husband and I were out driving and saw gas for $1.97 a gallon here in the Detroit suburbs. It's been about $2.03-$2.05 all week. Must be Bush's fault. /sarc
5 years ago, Italy was paying the equivalent of $8/gallon. A buddy of mine came over here from Italy, rented a car, and drove all over kingdom come--even taking pictures of himself at the pump for posterity.
We actually have it easy. I remind myself of him when I see the $2.25 signs.
Wonder how many of these are the same Watermelon Weenies who have screamed for years for the government to raise gas taxes to Eurotrash levels to discourage consumption?
Government remains the biggest profiteer per gallon on gasoline.
The problem is the collapsing dollar and not the gas price.
It's $1.83 on the corner with a drop of about 40 cents in the last few weeks.
Regular dropped below $2 today at the closest station.
A big part of the problem was speculation - an attempts to screw with the US election. everything will be fine soon.
And when Bush wanted to drill for oil in anwar and other places these people were the first to stop him.
If we had started drilling five years ago we would be geting some of that oil and the price would be far lower than now.
Amazing how they just ignore what guts their agenda.
Typical of the networks to jump all over a trend once it's over.
Sooner or later, they're going to do a story about that new Internet thing.
Here at my local station in Tucson, we peaked at $2.27 (when oil hit $58) and now are down to $2.18!
Remember the good old days when we were freaking out about a 5 cent increase in the gasoline tax?
