CBS News ^ | May 18th 2005 | Associated Press

The White House on Wednesday suggested one way for Newsweek to repair any damage from a story that ourtraged the muslim world and triggered deadly anti American protests in Afghanistan.

Presidential spokesman Scott McClellan urged the magazine's editors to take their case straight to the Muslim community by appearing on Arab television.

He made the comment after noting that Newsweek editors had already been appearing on US television outlets to talk about the incident.

Newsweek has retracted the story which alleged US interrogators defiled the Quran, Islam's holy book.

The White House quickly called on the magazines editors to find a way to set the record straight.

I'm not sure if that would be wise or not. All we need is for them to start unloading the often used phrases like, "Well, Bush lied and people died, so what?" & "We aren't sure yet if this story was false, it's just that our sources got nervous."

Yeah, I'll take a pass on Newsweek "fixing" anything.

How about they volunteer to shut down and never work in the industry again.

I believe that the publisher, editors involved, and the writer should give an open air forum in Afganistan to explain to the masses what they did!

This violent reaction by "peaceful" muslims is only a preview of what is to come. There is no way there won't be more "incidents" that Islamic fanatics will exploit to instigate rioting anywhere in the muslim world. The focus on Newsweek's mistake (good chance that the report true) is off the mark. The real story is the extreme volatility around the world and the risk it poses for Americans abroad. And when will some Islamic plot bring about a calamity right here at home?

How 'bout we let them walk the Arab streets telling the truth without military protection.

In terms of remedying the damage done, this proposal makes sense. So of course it won't be followed.

I wonder whether these islamists can reason at all. Maybe you could talk and explain to them a few things, but at the end they stab you anyway and cut your head off. I know I sound pessimistic, but aint that the truth ? think about it. It's in the core of the cult itself.

IMO that's about a dumb idea. You saw the way Newsweek and MSM twisted and squirmed and blamed everyone in the administration for their screw up. besides, the Muslims aren't interested in apologies they just want another excuse to kill.

The Muslims have their own media to stir up strife against Americans. Americans have their own media to do the same thing. Bastards.

I believe that the number one false premise in all of this is that muzzlims would kill one-another because they were told that some infidel flushed a copy of their playbook. (Talk about false reporting, geeeez!)

They should rejoice that Newsweek is in their corner sufficient to take a hit for them and (to make it even better) not seriously correct the record.

If it's occupied, he's probably pounding out another top-notch article from the same source.

Nice one Phil.

Let Whittaker and Isikoff give Al Jazeera an interview in an open-air forum in Pakistan. Maybe they could take Dan Rather along for star appeal. Eason Jordan can make the travel arrangements -- one way tickets should take care of it.

Better idea. Since the Newsweak article caused 17 deaths, why not that Newsweak should offer up the heads, for beheading, to the Arab world, of the author and the top 16 editors? Now that's a resolution that the Arab community could understand and work with?

Personally, I think the White House needs to lay off the "helpful hints" to Newsweak, pop some corn and pull up a chair. The Islamonazis aren't going to buy any explanations or apologies they'd make.

Besides, Newsweak and the rest of their MSM allies are doing a stellar job shredding any last vestiges of their "credibility" with their laughable attempts to pin all the blame on the Administration. The public is NOT buying it - all they're doing is digging their grave deeper.

They should leave Newsweak to squirm. To me, appealing to Arab TV seems like a waste of time, they don't care if a story is not true...they are looking forward to the next anit-American tripe from our wonderful MSM to use for their campaign. If it was easy to retract a story in the Arab propaganda machine I think the Israelis would be pros by now...unfortunately unlike that situation our own media is providing said propaganda.

Whether it was rational or not, I do believe there was rioting in the streets over this story and that at least 17 people died as a result.

People can make the case that Isikoff and Newsweek are not directly responsible. In a way I agree. The fact still remains, that if this "LIE" had not been devised, published and distributed, those seventeen people would still be alive today.

I'm of the opinion that if I did something at my place of employment that led to rioting and the loss of seventeen lives, whether it was here in the U.S. or overseas, I would probably not be allowed to do it again.

Isikoff will be allowed to do it again, whether it be tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. Newsweek will be allowed to carry on with it's head held high.

No, terrorists don't need our help to kill people. It just gripes me that they get so much of it.

If the Koran had been flush, it wouldn't be any more of a story than if a Bible were flush, and Newsweek wouldn't publish that on page 13,429,527,663,872 if there were such a thing. Why did they print the Koran story, knowing damned will it would start a Abu Grab prison level bruhau?

Newsweek is a gutter dwelling bottom feeding organization.
