Newsweek Apologizes Inaccurate Report on Koran Led to Riots

By Howard Kurtz Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, May 16, 2005; A01

Newsweek apologized yesterday for an inaccurate report on the treatment of detainees that triggered several days of rioting in Afghanistan and other countries in which at least 15 people died.

Editor Mark Whitaker expressed regret over the item in the magazine's "Periscope" section, saying it was based on a confidential source -- a "senior U.S. government official" -- who now says he is not sure whether the story is true.

The deadly consequences of the May 1 report, and its reliance on the unnamed source, have sparked considerable anger at the Pentagon. Spokesman Bryan Whitman called Newsweek's report "irresponsible" and "demonstrably false," saying the magazine "hid behind anonymous sources which by their own admission do not withstand scrutiny. Unfortunately, they cannot retract the damage that they have done to this nation or those who were viciously attacked by those false allegations."

I don't think they'll be losing any sleep over it.

Right, but we know very well that behind the apology is the attitude that this, too, is "fake but true."

The damage done by this terrible "error" will be impossible to measure. Newsweek is certainly responsible for the loss of life that has already occurred, but Muslim tensions all over the world do not need much to be transformed into deadly actions. In such a time as this, such reporting is not simply "irresponsible." It seems to me to be a form of treason.

Someone should be at a minimum fired, preferably charged with something.

Could you imagine the outrage if Fox News was the culprit? They'd probably be off the air by now.

Sadly, Rush said he was going to play in a charity golf tournament Monday. He always is gone when something big comes up...but I'm sure he will make up for our loss Tuesday.

I'm amazed that the Washington Post has put a senior reporter on this story and has made Newsweak look pretty bad. The key paragraph is buried well down in the article, but it's seriously damaging:

But the story is already showing signs of becoming the latest in a high-profile series of media blunders involving plagiarism, fabrications and questionable documents at such respected news organizations as the New York Times, USA Today and CBS News. In this case, the consequences -- deadly riots -- were far more serious than a breach of journalistic ethics.

Wow.

My source at Newsweek tells me that the people at the Newsweek office flushed hundreds of Korans down the toilet before printing the made up story...they wanted to test if it was possible to actually do it.

Monica-Gate - The Refresher Course

Michael Isikoff at Newsweek was the weasel who sat on and covered up the Monica Lewinski story that they had researched and written well before Matt Drudge dropped the bombshell and made the Clintonista MSM suddenly play catch-up because they were caught pimping for Slick Willie.

Are Newsweek mags stuffable in toilets? Because that is all they are good for, toilet stuffing.
