TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- Muslim parents and community leaders in Baltimore County have been lobbying for more than a year to get schools closed for two of their more important religious holidays. Schools are closed on Jewish and Christian holidays, they have argued repeatedly at school board meetings, so why not on Muslim holidays as well? Despite those efforts, the system's proposed calendar for the 2006-07 academic year does not close schools for Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, which celebrates the Koranic account of God's allowing Abraham to sacrifice a sheep instead of his son.

9/11 day would be nice.
No they're not. They just happen to close down around Easter. They call it spring break - not Easter. It's based on spring.
They just happen to shut down for Christmas, but it's not because of Christmas. It's called winter break. It's based on winter.
Unless the Muslims can come up with another season to declare a reason for a break - forget it. Religious holidays are no longer allowed.
Bingo!
Now THAT deserves a national holiday - in remembrance of those who were murdered by Muslims.
I wish these ba$tards went back to killing sheep.
For the 1^50 time, it is not a religion nor should it receive the protection offered religions. It is a death cult no better than the KKK. I don't see the KKK demanding a holiday in honor of sheets.
It's simply not a religion...It's a murderous way of life and total submission to an egomniac...just like Usama.
I have a better idea. Let's close down the public schools for 365 days each year.
Did the libs forget their beef about separation twixt church and state ????
"Bomb Day" would do that.
You have to ask yourself, 'why now?'. For all of these years this has not been important to them, yet now it is a major issue.
I believe it's because they see 9/11 as the beginning of the Muslim Renaissance, where they complete the conquest of the world that was interrupted in the Middle Ages.
Good point.
read the quran
behead a sheep
and celebrate diversity ...........

Beware of C.A.I.R. !!!
We don't have Christmas and Easter breaks, we have winter and spring breaks that just so happen to coincide with Christmas and Easter. How dare this publication suggest that Judeo-Christian holidays have any impact on the American schedule. Ridiculous! That would be an illegal endorsement of a particular religion! </srcsm>
What would be wrong with letting local school boards set school holidays according to what the majority of parents and taxpayers in the local community want?
In Massachusetts, St. Patrick's Day is a holidy under cover of Evacuation Day.
