Latino and immigrant support groups are mobilizing against the proposed Real ID Act, a federal law that would prohibit states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Immigrant support groups say Real ID would make roads less safe and could erode national security, not improve it.
"It will make millions of people that live in our nation hide even more," said Gustavo Torres, executive director of Casa de Maryland, a Latino advocacy group. "They are going to keep driving, keep working, but now they are going to be even more scared to participate in our society, to cooperate with police on crime issues."
Casa de Maryland, the National Council of La Raza and other groups hope to draw as many as 5,000 immigrants to a protest rally tomorrow afternoon at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.
State officials said they worry that the act would shift the burden -- and costs -- of immigration enforcement from the federal government to the states. Even states that already require proof of legal presence would have to revamp their systems to meet the more stringent requirements of the Real ID legislation.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation would cost states $100 million over five years to implement.
But Cheye Calvo, director of the transportation committee of the National Council of State Legislatures, said the costs to states could be five to seven times that.
"The cost of verifying these documents alone is incredible," Calvo said. "Then you have training, security standards, equipment, physical upgrades to the licenses, biometrics. This stuff doesn't come free."

Myth Illegal Immigrant support groups say Real ID would erode national security, not improve it. Fact; Taken to the limit if the US has no accountable ID system or relies on foreign ID systems ripe with forgery and corruption and the anarchy that accompanies , this will and has eroded national security, as documented by the 9-11 commission report.
Myth; Real ID would make millions of Illegal Immigrants who live in our nation hide even more. Fact; Real ID act would allow law enforcement to identify the legal citizens from the illegal citizens better, so that picking out an illegal immigrant would be easier and make them accountable if stopped and would make it so they would be unable to hide anymore.
Myth State officials said they worry that the act would shift the burden and costs of immigration enforcement from the federal government to the states. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation would cost states $100 million over five years to implement Fact, the states would save money on the long run by to not catering to illegal immigrants, it is estimated that California alone spends 10 billion a year in services which could be eliminated if there were a means to identity only those legal residence who were eligible for state services.

What does Alberto Gonzales have to say about REAL ID?
Being as he and President Bush received accolades from La Raza for having the right heritage when he was appointed AG, will he be able to separate his constitutional duties from his personal beliefs?
Inquiring minds want to know. ;-)
If they are going to have a rally to protest I think it would be a perfect opportunity for LA MIGRA to show up with transportation ready. One way ticket to Mexico.

I wonder if ICE will be attending this shindig.
Naah. They probably dont have enough folks to do catch and release.
Is it latino or hispanic? Come on folks, decide on a name for your victim group.
I am not exactly a big fan of any type of national ID. That said, if the "immigrants" are worried they will be caught, why not just come into the country legally instead?
ohh yeah, that would be to hard on the poor dears /sarcasm....

My son's nanny, who is a second or third generation US citizen of Mexican ancestry, and who moved out East from LA to take this job, is VERY opposed to illegals being in the U.S.
Who'd a thunk it, eh?
Of course, she also votes Republican, loves NASCAR, and is a passionate collector of all things John Deere ... so maybe she's just odd.
ILLEGAL adj. Contrary to the law; not legal. See synonyms under CRIMINAL.
Stand up for OUR country. I only hope the Blacks in the USA understand how Hispanic ( Mexican political domination will effect them )Ever travel in Mexico--not to integrated, using the United States colloquial definition of integrated.
They also use:
Latino-Anerican
Hispanic-American
variations on the above
La Raza
chicanos
That is the problem; THEY can't make up their minds.
The LIGHTER skinned and DARKER skinned Hispanics have class and race issues that go WAY back to when they were all Indians and Spaniards. The mixture decides who gets on the T.V. soaps and news shows. Major duh -- gueros, sí; morenos, no
The insertion of africans, that is, negros, is obvious to even us gringas -- they are lower on the, er, totem pole than even the poorest indio or indigeno.
Lol. It's all about RACE....that's why they LOVE it here. THEY can play their race card till the vacas come home and they will always win. Race trumps everything with our spineless, immoral, p.c. reverse-racist mentality.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!
Be Ever Vigilant!

So Gustavo admits that many illegals have valuable information about threats to national security (if they're not terrorists themselves). Interesting.
It's mainly law-breaking Mexican nationals, but it ain't PC to point that out.
The terms "Latino" and "hispanic" are sufficiently vague enough to be the terms of choice.
The other day I read an article that referred to illegal aliens as "people on the move".
One-third of the inmates in our country's prison are illegal immigrants.
I wish I could help you out, but most of my solutions are as illegal as they are.
No need for that; I'll bet for what we spend on services for the illegals we could build a doozy of a border wall.
It would be an excellent place to start. We already have a large pool of "willng workers" looking for gainful (albeit illegal) employment.
Maybe I'm paranoid, but this sure does sound like a thinly veiled threat.
