Pakistan 'catches al-Qaeda chief' (#3, not bin Laden)
BBC ^ | May 4, 2005

Posted on 05/04/2005 4:48:08 AM PDT by alnitak

Senior Libyan al-Qaeda suspect Abu Faraj al-Libbi has been arrested in Pakistan, the government says.

Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the suspect had been caught earlier in the week.

He would give no details of the arrest. Other reports said two suspects were captured in the Waziristan region of North West Frontier Province on Monday.

Libbi is said to have become third in the al-Qaeda hierarchy after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was caught in 2003.

He is wanted in connection with two attempts on the life of Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf.

More details soon.

When the US does it, it's frequently intentional. Psyops. Makes the bad guys scramble without preparation, increasing the odds they'll screw up badly and also interferes with the terrorists' recruitment efforts.

When Pakistan does it, it's usually a petty official looking for 15 minutes of fame. In this case, Musharraf is thumbing his nose at his enemies after vanquishing one of their top dogs. That is also psyops.

Pretty much my feeling.

Thank you for that. Looks like the story won't be buried after all.

I hope that's correct.

I've been home all day and it's been on all FNC programs this morning (several times on some).

Bravo! Good job!

Now as they say in the old westerns, let's give him a fair trial before we hang him. :)

"Pretty much my feeling."

I guessed that. Just backing you up, since I've noticed recently that an increasing number of posters have been bashing everything the administration does, while accusing anyone who dares to posit whatever offense currently has the former type of posters' panties in a twist is nothing but a blind apologist who's wrong.

I've tried searching on this topic on FR using several different keywords, and this is the only thread with more than 16 replies (it also has almost 4,000 views).

Maybe the interest will pick up this evening.

Yeah, I noticed that. Ol'Parveez just might take this guy personally. He might get winter panties and slightly more tension on the leash?

Prior to his capture was he competing in some sort of world map face painting contest?

Fox doesn't surprise me, though they've been dropping the ball lately. Just heard it on CNN...now THAT surprises me.

I still think Binny has been taking a dirt-nap in Tora Bora for the past two years.

You are way off - UBL is most certainly alive (as is Al Zawahiri and Mullah Omar...or do you believe they are all dead as well??) -

Fact is UBL has ekked out a survival in the one area where US SOF haven't been able to hunt for him independently...that is the Pak border region -

Though, even hunting for him independently in that region wouldn't guarantee success in finding him - The area is simply brutal to operate in -

But UBL is most certainly alive (hell, he put out a video discussing John Kerry last year....in 2001 or 2002...he wouldn't have had a clue to who Kerry was) - And irregardless of video's....follow the shooters....we don't have almost all of DevGru humping the mountains of the Pak / Afghan border region looking for a nobody - These guys hunt top-HVT's -

Exactly right 90% of the time (the other 10% it is usually a fk up by some want to make a name for themselves type individual)

As for this raid - the "on the record" can say it was done by Pakistan forces - But the "off the record" would show a whole different story -

Is it just me or some of the rest of you find it odd that even on FR this subject is no longer of too much interest apparently?

Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to the daily Operation Phantom Fury--Day 178 - Now Operation River Blitz--Day 73

We try our darndest to keep up with what is going on in Iraq and on the War on Terror.

A good percent of Freepers are employed, so they slip in here to read although they may not be able to post during working hours.

Has someone already pointed-out that this story is NOT to be found on Drudge?

It was all over the news at noon and the story broke at 5-6 AM?

Are those actually his shoulders? Looks like the head was photoshopped onto a blouse hanging on a flimsy wire coat hanger.
