Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

I think you defined in a profound and understandable way what the Dinner was all about. I believe that too many people not only take George W for granted, they are condescending of Laura also, and she hit a huge homerun. I believe she probably discussed the jokes regarding Lynn Cheney,Barbara Bush,Sandra Day Oconnor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg with them in advance. With the success of the appearance on the Leno Show and this successful endeavor she is batting 1000. This is all positive and I cannot believe how some people are taking this to be bad. You did good in your first post.
Talk about projection. You are politically attacking those who disagree with you.
I would have ripped into Hillary for doing this, or Tipper Gore, or -- shudder --, Te-re-za. This has nothing to do with politics, and instead is about what I think is poor judgement from the bully pulpit.
You agreed with his post, in which he clearly asserted that women should SUBMIT to their husbands.
So, are you saying she has a though and a life, but only the ones you let her have?
Laura is depraved. I am depraved. The President is depraved. My husband is depraved. Anyone who isn't incensed at Laura's depravity is also depraved.
And YOU, dirtboy, are purer than the rest of us. I should have recognized that from the beginning. SO sorry.
crawling off into my depraved little hole.........
Interesting analogy. Minnie Pearl came from a well-to-do household and was well educated, a college graduate, relatively rare for women of her generation, especially in the South. Her "country cousin" public persona was quite different from what she was like in real life. Was the "quiet librarian" putting on a different persona for political purposes? Only the Shadow knows.
I take it you don't?
If they had been around farmers/ranchers they would have known that. I do not understand why there is such criticism about a joke that has been around for many years.
That would be good advice to those who are ascertaining the state of my marriage on this thread because of comments my wife made this morning while ironing my shirt and watching TV.
The Shadow knows one thing now for sure: you're all about trashing Laura Bush.
You should mention how it doesn't matter to you that you perpetually lose, unless, of course, you get the middleground aboard.
Well, we now know one thing about you: you're too stupid to realize you've just insulted quite a few of the women on this forum.
I would tell it to my friends in choir because they would know what the joke was about and it was not sexual!
I haven't seen them. I'm doing well if I can keep up with the ones specifically addressed to me.
But, hey, thanks for granting me the benefit of the doubt. I can just feel the love!
No, Desperate Housewives is depraved. Incorporating it into a joke from the bully pulpit is just wrongheaded. But calling anyone insane who points that out shows just how whacked-out basic values have become.
Oh - but you're wrong... some indeed have. She was wildly off-leash at that dinner, disobeying her command to be submissive to her husband at all times.
Well he's a different kind of man. There is no way in HELL I wouldn't have a problem with my wife going to a strip club shoving dollar bills down a sweaty freaks underwear. I wonder how many male Freepers would agree with your husbands stance. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but as long I'm taking care of business at home my wife has no need to visit a disease infested freak show and embarrass her family.
She made fun of herself!! I'm not even sure I should be sorry you're offended by that.
Duck Cheney and her ducklings I am surprised she was not taken to a undisclosed location LOL
