Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.
CUT
Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

Rush just played several excerpts. I was lucky enough to surf to CSPAN Saturday night just in time to see Laura Bush. She was very funny and we were all laughing in this house, including my 11 year old (we're out west so it was only 7pm).
Better not post to me again, now. You might be accused of being in "my gang." :-)
Talking of quacks Pippin did you here the Treasurer duck got a motorcade ride to the water for her and ducklings yesterday.
Eggs actly, MamaB. That's why it was funny. How in the world could Hillary have made the same kind of jokes? It would have ripped her heart out. People would have lowered their eyes out of shame for her. What a bunch of dunces these people are! She didn't have to cross the line to make the jokes. Anyone who could imagine Ruth Ginsberg or Sandra Day O'Conner at a Chippendales, needs to take a long rest at Sunnydale and a little shock treatment.
So I don't think you can characterize me as somehow only "seeking darkness."
You sound like you have no class whatsoever.
Any offense IS intended, unlike your weaselly post.
Some of what you say is true but the majority of it was just hidden.
I'm just checking in and I see the hankie twisters are STILL in a dither. My, my. The name calling of the First Lady by so-called Christians is appalling.
I'm firmly convinced most of these people are just opinion shapers who pretend to be Christians and then come here to get everyone riled up.
I live in the Bible Belt, most of my friends and neighbors are Baptist, and not one of them was offended. Far from it. So I think these whiners we're seeing are faux Christians...anyone can say they are anything on the internet.
Well said
I tend to agree with those that don't get offended by what Laura said. I don't know the details but your being offended by the mere mention of Desperate Housewives ( have you ever seen it and what do you watch? ) borders on prudery the likes of which I only see on really bad days at church.
I'm a lapsed Episcopalean. My wife is a lapsed Catholic. Neither one of us approves of what Laura did, but we're not calling her names, we're just questioning her judgement.
Try a different spin.
Can any of you write a post with out a snide remark?
Anyway, whatever, I am done with this thread. Those that needed to know the scoop have been told and now know to just ignore the small group who live to bash Christians who have a very conservative philosophy.
I see some others have shown up to kiss up.....whatever....you guys continue on with your small group....I for one am moving on.
Mission accomplished.
Fine. See my #623.
She probably didn't give a sh!t that Jane Fonda was in the crowd. The feminists wouldn't be impressed with a first lady unless it was someone as evil as Hillary.
And your way would have been an open attack, in lack of judgment and exceptionally poor taste under any rules etiquette. There are ways, Sir, and then there ARE WAYS, Sir. Don't give up your day job.
Not to worry. Im still in my flame suit. I'm prepared for anything.
Prudery? Considering the amount of teen pregnancy, abortion, sex and violence in entertainment, ruined marriages, adultery, promotion of homosexuality - much of it cheered on by popular entertainment - calling into question the First Lady mentioning a vapid show glorifying adultery is PRUDERY?
This thread just made MSNBC! 'Countrecount' comments were featured prominiently...
I did not say youpersonally claimed victimhood for yourself, but if that was the way I came across, I apologize.
My point was that you are claiming that some small group makes fun of Christians and you're tired of it. I was just pointing out that the very conservatives you claim others are bashing are not so innocent themselves.
