Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

On this type of website, people should be examining her position on abortion instead of this type of stuff.

I think it's relevant to examine both, because both are aspects of the cultural wars.

We're all political junkies here,......

Exactly. That's because this is a POLITCAL forum, not a Christian forum. While many of us are Christians, this is not where we come to be preached to, lectured to, or judged.

Laura was FUNNY!!

many FReepers are giving Laura Bush a pass on these remarks they would never have given Hillary Clinton, Tipper Gore, or Teresa Heinz.

I'm on record on these threads as having said Tur-ray-zuh would be a hoot as the first lady (actually I said that BEFORE she took the silly cheap shot at Laura, THEN she got on my fightin side).

The point being that some of us enjoy life and a good laugh at every opportunity. from wherever the source.

Might it be a matter of what your seeking? Lightness or darkness?

It seems no one is happy if the aren't complaining about something and if they cant find anything to complain about they invent them.

Why do you think we call 'em the Perpetually Preturbed and/or The Malcontents?

Joe, are you deliberately trying to make something more out of this than it was?

If you grew up on a farm, like you say you did, you had to know it's an OLD joke, been told for years. It's NOT dirty.

"There was a time, not too long ago, when well-bred Southern ladies, which Mrs. Bush purports to be, would die a thousand deaths before telling bawdy jokes before an audience of 2,500 in the nation's capital."

Your would not happen to be related to that other famous “Southern,” bigoted family, Wallace?

You and many others, on this thread and others, who take exception to Laura's extremely funny repertoire and are so willing to condemn her comments, simply give ammunition to those Libs/Dims who are intent on characterizing all of "us" conservative/Republicans as "Extreme-Intolerant-Right-Wing-Religions-Zealots."

As a Christian (Catholic) who has been around (a Nam Vet) I took no offense to any of Laura's "jokes," [primarily] because they were so outrageous (can you imagine her and Condi and Hughes actually going to a Chippendales--much less seeing justices Greenberg and O’Connor there?) that is what made them so funny? That is "real" comedy, as opposed to Chris Rock or Whoopi Goldberg.

The ONLY comment (as a Very Conservative Patriot) I took exception too (and ONLY for a millisecond) was Laura’s reference to GW’s answer to everything was taking a chainsaw to it and that is why he got along so well with Cheney and Rumsfeld.

When I realized that it was in fact a “shot” at the MSM, (for all of their castigating of President Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld, et al for their War Against Terror[ist])I laughed heartily at this joke as well.

Some of you need to get a life and quit trying to impose your narrow-minded values and mores on the rest of us.

Exactly. That's because this is a POLITCAL forum, not a Christian forum.

I'm a lapsed Episcopalean - hardly a fundie - and I think Laura went a bit too far myself. One can make a basic decision on how the bully pulpit should be used, in a time of non-stop coarsening of popular culture, without making it into something more than that.

Exactly. Please know that this is a small group. The majority on FR agree with us in the fact that they are against a small group constantly attacking Christians who are very conservative in their philosophy.

They will make all kinds of snide comments, but just ignore them....they will eventually head over to the smoky backroom. I also heard that if you quote the bible it will run them off. just kidding!!!

I do think you make a point there these events like the Correspondents Dinner and Gridiron Club were not meant to be shown on C-SPAN and dissected by the media.

Originally, their purpose was to give Congressional members, political leaders and media a chance to kick back and relax not having to worry about politics and maybe make some connections and get things done.

I do agree that there was some political strategy at play with Laura 'saving the day' with humor like Nancy Reagan did in the early 80's when her hubands poll numbers were down.

And it seems history has repeated itself with the First Lady being a smash hit.

You are correct.

Once one is aware that the First Lady approves of dismembering unborn children, her appreciation for Desperate Housewives and Chippendales immediately makes more sense and disappears into the background.

For me the Chippendales comment was the funniest thing she said.

I mean, can you picture Lynn Cheney with a dollar bill, sitting with Laura and Condi and Karen Hughes...........and meeting Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Ginsburg?? It was hysterical in its absurdity!

Some things are best left un-"pictured" and unspoken.
