Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

........And she brought into it the names of other ladies in this administration who may not appreciate the association.

They probably loved it!!! It was really very funny.

Only a liberal could see something sexual in those remarks.  Probably offended because they're afraid that the Bushes are targeting one of their new constituencies.

Another perfect example of someone jumping to wild conclusions about someone they have never met....and it won't surprise many on this board to see that it was you.

I don't have to jump to anything; I continually seeing your whining about "the usual suspects" on practically every thread you're on.

You're a perfect example of somebody who, for some personal reason, believes people are against her and/or don't like her.

You appear to be one of those people who required something to be "wrong" with the people who disagree with you.

We have to remember that Laura lived in Midland before meeting George.

Telling an 'Aggie joke' on a late Saturday night while in the company of friends is perfectly acceptable and almost required in Texas.

People would think of you as a bore or not having socially acceptable skills otherwise.

And the fact that Nancy Reagan's speechwriter who was credited with saving Reagan's term with the 'Secondhand Clothes' song helped Laura with her remarks only confirms my opinion.

It is now well established by people who apparently are far more aware than you, that the milking the horse joke was not at all what you, in your dirty little mind, made it out to be.......and have graphically, and lewdly explained to us.

Therefore, your offense at the First Lady was only in your imagination.

You, on the other hand, while trashing the First Lady, suggested that next year she would top her act by losing her clothing..........which was disrespectful and disgusting........not to mention ludicrous.

You have no more credibility on which to speak about morality, Spiff. The people around here who actually practice morality and speak with morality, are defending the First Lady.

And I'm not kidding.

Howlin: I would agree and disagree. First of all, how would one go about milking a horse. I'm not sure you're a farmer, but I was growing up. There's only one way.

Secondly, while this certainly wasn't dinner hour, it will make reply throughout the course of the day on the news and squack programs, including the conservative ones as they attemtp to minimize the damage, if there was any.

In addition, while the Bush's aren't saints, except that the religious right painted them into that corner with thier Godly people talk and God placed them in the right place at the right time, they do represent a party that is attempting to push back the bawdy humor on television. This was bawdy humor.

I'm no purest, but I believe it was unbecoming of a first lady, especially this first lady. There are several ways to tell a joke to infer that an ivy league guy would have trouble getting milk from an animal. Such as where's the spout for white and chocolate. Or where's the handle for the refridge. Or I thought it would say Westinghouse on it somewhere.

Is this the end of the world? Heck no. I guess I'm only pointing out the fact that the so many here would be howlin if this fowed from the mouth of a dem, but they are quick to circle the wagon on one of their own.

I've seen some threads where the Bushes are the butt of jokes, some blue and some rauncy. But even the blue ones are heavily criticized for their blue content. A couple of Mrs. Bush's jokes were blue. Was she wrong? Oh, probably not. Should she be a little more cautious? Certainly.

"It's also interesting to see that you have obliquely accused me of lying, even though I haven't."

Bull.

Like Jesus did when dealing with the legalists, I merely exposed you as the self-righteous "accuser" that you are.

You won't get too far.

That is what is at the bottom of this; we've all "seen" how far they will get without the rest of us -- what was it, one percent?

How about sin of ommission? Your not challenging that statement?

I didn't come across a statement calling the First Lady a whore.

Was it fine by you that he called her a whore?

As I go back through the thread, I see that no one actually called her a whore, but accused her of using language that a whore would use.

That statement is unkind and unfair, but I have to ask - do you have a consistent posting policy of always publicly separating yourself from every over-the-top comment made on a thread?

How about this: for the future I hereby disavow all nasty comments made about individuals that I like.

Hey, listen up IT WAS A JOKE!!

You know, A JOKE!!

The left thinks Christians are a bunch of fuddy-duddy's - and we're not.

People like David Korn - well what can you say about a person who can never find ANYTHING GOOD about any republican - that's not a joke - that's a serious mental disorder.

Nothing said is going to change what was said at the dinner. Either one thinks it funny or is offended. Those who continue to attack the First Lady on this are exposing more about themselves than perhaps they would wish

Well said Miss Marple

"Yeah but could you imagine if Hillary, Tipper or Ms. Ketchup said it? The outrage would have pooring through the threads."

Also if those females had told the same jokes it would not have been funny. It WAS funny because it was Laura and therefore preposterous.
