Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

...several times repeated I might add..which is just as much in bad taste...was not called for and was used only to incite reaction for why be using such descriptive slanderous terms at all? I also replied immediately after.

No matter what our "take" on the story on which I focused depicting comments by some in the Liberal media, -those I highlighted- had more class then some of the posters on this FR site.

I am still reading and wonder what Kool-aid some are drinking today?

I'm only on post 99 and you've said the same thing like six times already.

This thread goes on for over 1000 posts, so if it's mostly you for the rest of it, I'll quit now.

I think you have me mistaken; as I have said many times Laura had a writer and worked with the delivery...this was of course scripted and I enjoyed every minute of it; as I guess I don't read SEX into everything I read. I saw only satire and good fun...If someone was offended; then that I am sorry about, but don't use the Stinging Branch on me..I was also just the messenger posting the story.

If the liberal media was offended, it was not really Laura Bush at the Roast that offends them, but merely the anger they feel for the President and the Administration.

Wow...you got all of that out of her five minutes of delivery? This thread should not be on MSNBC; but Oprah and Dr. Phil!

Oprah you reading all this? ;)

Chippendales is a club where you go to watch people dance. Does that work for you and your 4 year old? Get your mind out of the gutter.

You used the term three times in one post. That is what I noticed.

Personally, I find you a poster child for why conservatives don't attract more support. You can try all the obfuscation that you can muster, but you are the one posting about the First Lady in such derogatory terms.

One day I hope George Bush finds you and gives you what you deserve.

Skelton has some stuff out on DVD or video, I think. The clips I've seen on TV are funny (as was he) but it wasn't all innocent humor. But Laura's act really was in the Lucy/Skelton mode. Anyone who is shocked by anything she said has had their mind polluted. It really was pretty mild. What made it good was her perfect timing and innocent demeanor.

I am known as a real prude, and I wouldn't have minded my grandchildren watching it. As I replied to someone earlier on the thread -- the response to "What's Chippendales?" is "a place where people go to watch people dance."

Good grief, she slept in a different bed than Ricky in I Love Lucy!

She may have slept in a different bed, but her skits were full of double entendres. Have you seen any re-runs lately?

Besides, many FReepers are giving Laura Bush a pass on these remarks they would never have given Hillary Clinton, Tipper Gore, or Teresa Heinz. There would be a 2,000 post entry railing against their poor taste were they the ones who made such remarks.

Which Freepers are those? Can you name them?

Interesting. And, just to explore your sensibility, if you came home to see your husband, with four or five adult Christian men, hooting and hollering at a naked female exotic dancer, would that be okay too?

Why are you so interested in everyone's sex life? That's between codercpc and her husband. I do not think your analogy makes sense.

As long as we're slinging around self-righteous high-minded Biblical sentiments:

9Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, "God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

--Luke 18: 9-14

Your posts, sport, are the very embodiment of the smug Pharisee mentioned in the passage above. I doubt you've read enough Scripture to have run across the old Motes & Beams admonition by the same author, or if you did you simply chose to ignore it.

thing is that farmer-poser is NOT a conservative. Conservatives know how to laugh. HE is a non-smiling, humorless drone who likes to make himself superior by criticizing those who have a sense of humor.

These kind of people are TEDIOUS, if I may borrow Laura Ingraham's term.

If Laura Bush had taken the podium and said "God be merciful to me, a sinner," your argument might hold some weight. But Laura is neither the self-righteous Pharisee, nor the tax-collector, and there is little to be learned from your clumsy reference in this instance. On the other hand, there is much to be learned from this: "if your brother sins, rebuke him.."

Barbour is responsible for growing the party to what it is today. Today, the GOP cuts deep into Democrat territory, leaving the Democrats left with fringe kooks.

Exactly right. It's impossible to praise Haley Barbour in excess of what he deserves. That man is thee best, bar none.

Why are you so interested in everyone's sex life?

Ahem...the topic at hand, whether Laura's remarks were in good or bad taste, whether they help or hurt the cause of the values coalition, centered on her telling of a Chippendale's joke. "God Fearing" Coderpc was proudly unapologetic for visiting a male strip show--and told me so. It would seem she made it personal, not me.

Apparently the concept of irony escapes you...a brand of humor that God employs all the time, but if we were to weigh His sense of irony against your statements, GOD would be unclean.

LIGHTEN UP, FOR PETE'S SAKE. INSTEAD OF WASTING YOUR TIME HERE, MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO 'DEMONSTRATE' YOUR BRAND OF HUMOR TO THE WORLD...SEE HOW FAR YOU GET.

TEDIOUS!
