Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

She may have been caught off guard. I would have been. I tend to laugh too when I'm uncomfortable in public.

Show us YOUR humor dearie...

She made a terrible mistake.

^^

I would not call it a terrible mistake, but I felt that it was inappropriate for the First Lady to talk this way.

I think the left STILL does not get it. It was an adult night and not about having children present. If this was meant for children and not adults perhaps but it was not and there were not.

The MSM is just upset because it was good.

The only fudy dudies these days are the democrat loosers.

Only a liberal could see something sexual in those remarks

Or someone who has a problem with...the dark side. ;)

Hello. I am back from the sleep apnea doctor. He said I quit breathing 82 times an hour. No wonder I wake up feeling like I never got any sleep no matter what time I went to bed. He agrees with my ENT who says I need a tongue reduction. Yep, that is what they said. Never heard of that before!!!!! I should have known it though because when I was little I was one of a very few who could touch their nose with their tongue!!!!!

What have I missed since I left?

"The obvious ignorance of those who believe this is a sexual joke is hysterical.

Since I was born and raised in Texas, I never gave the joke a second thought until I came here today."

Likewise. Having been born and raised on a dairy farm in WI, I never gave a second thought to that joke until reading some of these comments.

I'm actually quite astounded to find that there are people out there who think this is a sexual joke.

One thing is clearly not funny are RINOs adopting the tried and true Marxist technique of not defending their positions but smearing their opponents. However, you do have wonderful career potential in the MSM. Who knows, you may replace Peter Jennings or Katie Couric.

This whole spring has not been good for me. I do not know why but my daughter and I have been having some bad moments. She said she had never felt Jan's presence more than she had lately. I am still having dreams about her and she always has a big smile, is happy and healthy. Some of them have been really odd, too. We are going up to my mil's for Mother's Day. I felt so bad for a lady I know at church. She came up to me several months ago and wanted to know how Jan was doing and then she realized what she had said.

DollyCali : thank you :D :D :D!!

You actually MISS Houston?! LOL LOL LOL!! Im a native and am not too sure I would miss it...well, maybe the really great restaurants and the shopping...but I could easily do without the 5-6 months of solid Heat from Hades (ooops! Guess my moral character slipped a notch!)

Actually, am put out enough with Lucas to think that maybe my money will be better spent on a bootleg copy. I've spent enough money on his franchise. I know I sound bitter and should just enjoy it as mindless entertainment, but I lost confidence in Lucas' ability to tell a story after Ep Two. I just couldn't sympathise with the characters.

thank you for checking out my church. We are teeny tiny, and I am at a loss as to how to get people to attend. I am not entirely sure if the fact that going to church every Sunday is too much of a burden for a lot of the people in our area....or that they are looking for entertainment. We are a highly traditional church, with a catch-22 : we are small and therefore cannot offer some services that people look for, but cannot get those services because very few of us are regular. I am not sure what the problem is, but every one has wracked their brains trying to think of something.

thought it wasn't exactly appropriate for a woman in her position, but maybe they're trying to appeal to the younger generation?

When did you stop being young? This was all satirical comedy at a roast. When does someone suddenly get old in thought? 30, 40? I am blessed that my friends all have a sense of humor. Laughter is the best medicine and people live longer so they report.

Will tell you a quick story: A friend told me of this lady who had her breast removed at a later age in life. She didn't complain; but laughed it off and said she was tired of it hanging in her dough when she baked. (Yes, she had a dress on but yu know what I mean). Now that is when a cup is half full! not half empty!

*winks*

BWUAAAAAHAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

THAT'S hilarious! Because I think Laura was hilarious, I am suddenly a RINO! Because I find humor that she displayed actually non-threatening to my support of conservative principles, I am now a Fallen FReeper!!

What pray tell do YOU think is funny? My guess its at the level of Mr. Rogers. Most conservatives with a sense of humor have graduated beyond that, but I'll accept that some are still grade-school.

Thanks for the belly laugh!

I just got on this thread for the last 200 posts.

you've sneaked back to "24", haven't you, just as I predicted! (ha)

Wish I'd seen the anecdote about your marriage though. It might explain a lot.

I never was much of a student in HS of Englsh/literature.. but one poem stuck with me then & now.Wordsworth's We are Seven. Are you familiaar with it? For some reason when I read your post, it immediately came back to my mind.

Not to sound "freaky" but I really do believe there are connections that transcend death. having been a chaplain & worker with Many deaths & follow up, I know there are facts & situations we cant deny.

 We Are Seven

William Wordsworth (1770–1850)

A SIMPLE Child,
That lightly draws its breath,
And feels its life in every limb,
What should it know of death?

I met a little cottage Girl:	        5
She was eight years old, she said;
Her hair was thick with many a curl
That clustered round her head.

She had a rustic, woodland air,
And she was wildly clad: 10
Her eyes were fair, and very fair;
—Her beauty made me glad.

‘Sisters and brothers, little Maid,
How many may you be?’
‘How many? Seven in all,’ she said, 15
And wondering looked at me.

‘And where are they? I pray you tell.’
She answered, ‘Seven are we;
And two of us at Conway dwell,
And two are gone to sea. 20

‘Two of us in the church-yard lie,
My sister and my brother;
And, in the church-yard cottage, I
Dwell near them with my mother.’

‘You say that two at Conway dwell, 25
And two are gone to sea,
Yet ye are seven!—I pray you tell,
Sweet Maid, how this may be.’

Then did the little Maid reply,
‘Seven boys and girls are we; 30
Two of us in the church-yard lie,
Beneath the church-yard tree.’

‘You run above, my little Maid,
Your limbs they are alive;
If two are in the church-yard laid, 35
Then ye are only five.’

‘Their graves are green, they may be seen,’
The little Maid replied,
‘Twelve steps or more from my mother’s door,
And they are side by side. 40

‘My stockings there I often knit,
My kerchief there I hem;
And there upon the ground I sit,
And sing a song to them.

‘And often after sun-set, Sir, 45
When it is light and fair,
I take my little porringer,
And eat my supper there.

‘The first that died was sister Jane;
In bed she moaning lay, 50
Till God released her of her pain;
And then she went away.

‘So in the church-yard she was laid;
And, when the grass was dry,
Together round her grave we played, 55
My brother John and I

‘And when the ground was white with snow,
And I could run and slide,
My brother John was forced to go,
And he lies by her side.’ 60

‘How many are you, then,’ said I,
‘If they two are in heaven?’
Quick was the little Maid’s reply,
‘O Master! we are seven.’

‘But they are dead; those two are dead! 65
Their spirits are in heaven!’
’Twas throwing words away; for still
The little Maid would have her will,
And said, ‘Nay, we are seven!’

Just an observation: you certainly seem to like using the word "whore."

You seem attuned to the term as well. Perhaps you believe it is never deserved? Thomas Jefferson once wrote his daughter, admonishing her not to act like certain "slutty" girls of her acquaintance. Perhaps you would take him to task as well, because, in fact, no one can ever chide anyone, at all, because that violates the gospel of "nice?"

Laura Bush cheapened herself, and her cause, the other night.
