St. Petersburg police officers have added the Colt AR-15 rifle to their inventory to counter the expiration of the assault weapons ban and the appearance of more heavily armed criminals.
ST. PETERSBURG - (AP) -- The expiration of the nation's ban on the sale of assault rifles and the appearance of more heavily armed criminals have pushed more than 100 St. Petersburg police officers to order assault rifles of their own for official duty.
The first group of officers completed the required 16 hours of instruction for using Colt AR-15s in January.
The semiautomatic weapons fire bullets that travel up to 2,700 feet per second and are powerful enough to penetrate body armor.
''St. Petersburg -- it's not so sleepy any more,'' said Tom Jacwin, a 22-year veteran who is getting used to his new weapon.
``The bad guys are smarter and better armed.''
Police Chief Chuck Harmon approved use of the AR-15s last June with guidelines that took months to develop.
Officers who want the weapons must buy them for $1,100.
The rifles may be used only in ``a high-risk situation, such as to overcome suspects with superior firepower, in response to an active shooter situation, when confronted by barricaded subjects, during stakeout and perimeter operations, for felony vehicle stops.''
The weapons must be stored in a hard case in the trunk of a patrol car except when being used.
They can't be modified for automatic fire, and officers must qualify with them in the shooting range each year.
Critics say that the speed and 300-yard range of the bullets pose a threat to bystanders.
Advocates say the assault rifles are vastly better than the standard Glock handguns assigned to officers and are more accurate than the pump-action shotguns that the department makes available.
Two Remminton 760 Gamemasters, and a military 30-06 Springfield with a new stock, scope, and machined bolt to clear the scope tube. The clips for the gamemaster can be tack welded bottom to bottom. You can load them both with five rounds each. When one side empies when you pump, you just flip the clip. It's not a fast sighting gun though. It's light and kicks like an unpaid prostitute. Firing a 30-06 gamemaster repeatedly and accurately takes a good five seconds between shots. The pump action doesn't help. I prefer a bolt and a little bit of weight.
I said nor implied any of the inferences you put to keyboard. Good law enforcement takes patience and a stone cold calm. Of course criminals should be arrested! They should be arrested at a time and place of the choosing of professional police, not neccessarily when all the testosterone, adrenaline, and mayhem is playing a signifigant role on all comers to the ball.

Factory loads offer a 110 grain ball.
I don't recall what the FPS of factory loads is, but my Hornady manual shows a 110 gr. bullet @ 2100 fps (muzzle velocity) when loaded with 14.9 grains of H110.
That is how safe, effective policework is done despite the television or five minute speeches from politicians.

Oh, of course! Officers should never try to arrest someone in the act of committing a crime. Let them finish up, make their escape and just look them up later. Rape victims and abused wives should especially appreciate this technique.
May I take this opportunity to say that you haven't a clue about what is good police procedure. If your alleged LEO neighbors thought a bank robbery didn't deserve their attention, then I extend that criticism to them as well.
I have been a police officer. I suspect you have not. I also suspect there are reasons the LAPD respond to bank robberies like they are serious, violent crimes in progress. That would be because they are!
Next time you're talking to one of your LEO neighbors, ask them if the LAPD is coming to them asking for advice on tactics and policies. I'd bet a lot of money that they are not.

...unless you're the victim. By your philosophy, the victim shouldn't try to defend themselves or their home, car, property, etc. but rather let the criminal have free reign of all, to avoid any nasty confrontations. In other words, there is no defense any longer, self or otherwise! ...just let criminals have their way. They might hurt someone. Maybe that should be your tagline, eh?

Now I know it's exciting to think that being a cop is thrilling, but it's not. It's supposed to be tedious and full of personal restraint. It takes almost a super-human to not be reactive when it's our nature.
As for my neighbor cops, they moved to towns farther from Philly so they could eat their dinners in peace. They still respond and still wear out the pen on paperwork. Not a job for many..........
But police cannot prevent or stop crime based on the nature of our society's charter. The only way they can impact crime rates is to make good arrests based on solid evidence presented before a good/wise judicial authority.
Part of the reason for that has to do with the gas operation system the Mini 14 employs. It has a floating piston attached to a recoil arm that seats in a fixed gas cylinder inside the forend at the front of the stock. Gas is bleed off the barrel into the fixed cylinder and forces the floating piston out of the cylinder. When the hot gas vents into the forend it heats the underside of the barrel diferentially from the top of the barrel. That causes the barrel to "warp" slightly from the heat.
At close ranges, it means nothing. Out past 100 yards the warping causes the point of aim to shift as the weapon heats from use. This is bad for accuacy. The advantage of the system is that it works and it works all the time. After the weapon heats totally, the point of aim changes again. It can be annoying.
Pick up a semi-auto Remington 7400 chambered for 30.06. Ten round clips are available. No pistol grip so it's under the radar of "assault" weapons bans. And they're cheap, like under $500!

I'll be interested in knowing how a pro rates the AR-10.I have a carbine AR-10 and it has not always been as reliable as my M1A. Failure to extract has been a source of problems with the AR10 with certain ammo. However with the carbine length barrel and a muzzle brake it surely gets the attention of the guy shooting next to me on the range.

I would add: "...and shoot bad guys pointing guns at them or other people, tackle the ones that run from you and pepper-spray the obnoxious ones, in order to deter such behavior." ...but that's just me. :-)
