Confederacy of the determined - (Southern heritage buffs vow "Confederate History Month")
WASHINGTON TIMES.COM ^ | APRIL 24, 2005 | Christina Bellantoni

Posted on 04/24/2005 6:08:20 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.

"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."

Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.

Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.

In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."

Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.

Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

According to the SPLC (which you've already cited as authoritative, through their Klanwatch organization), there are 89 Klan chapters in the 11 former confederate states, more than the rest of the US combined. Why is that?

In 1948, when the hustings were loud with revivified Confederate rhetoric, and Dixiecrat rallies tended to be festooned with battle flags, the UDC pointedly condemned the flag's use in "any political movement."

Well I certainly applaud the efforts of the southern heritage groups back in the 1940s to stop the misuse of the Confederate Battle Flag for political purposes. [That 1948 citation must be referring to Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats]. However those objections fell on deaf ears.

By the time the Democrats opposed to Brown vs. Board of Education signed the Southern Manifesto in 1956, there was no southern heritage group opposition to the misuse of the CBF as a political symbol, or as a symbol of segregation. From there, it was quite logical that the KKK would choose the same standard to identify with as their political front group(s).

the SCV & UDC have gone to federal courts repeatedly (since 1950!) to try to protect our CSA symbols from IDIOTS like the KKK & the White Citizens Council.

Lets see some proof of that assertion stand, if they were in court then there's a record of it.

"when are you going to REpost your #645, so that everyone can see & judge if YOU are a RACIST & a BIGOT of massive proportions????

As I recall you were on a week long binge screaming, ranting & non-stop insults at those you tag 'the damnyankee coven' murdered your whole family, who you claimed are 'nonwhites, (what are they green?, coupled with raging on about crazy invented figures of hundreds of thousands of Southern blacks/slaves 'rushing out to fight for the Confederate', plus scores of other goof-ball names directed at numerous people on this thread.

Say I just made all that up.

I told you to 'clam up Tonto' Big deal! -stifle yourself meathead , or I'll deflate your wigwam. -- there, that will give you additional ammo for calling me a racist & a bigot ('of massive proportions') lololol, also a damnYankee and who knows what else.

Happy now?

"And what if Kirk's wedding ceremony was performed by Aryan Nations founder Richard Butler?"

Don't you know it doesn't matter, no problem, Kirk just pulled Butler's name out the phone book -- by chance (according to Mr. Stand)

Remember, the volumes on old Kirk are an invention of the 'damnYankee coven', It all lies, lies I tell ya, I don't believe one rotten word of it! :)

The only people who benefit from having the battle flag show up at Klan rallies are people who share your general hatred of the south. The descendents of Union Civil War veterans, at least those involved in round tables and renactors, certainly don't express the vitriol and bitterness charactersitic of your writing. One reason appears to be that those who genuinely like America don't hate its constituent parts. Scratch a south-hater and you find an America hater lurking underneath.

"The only people who benefit from having the battle flag show up at Klan rallies are people who share your general hatred of the south."

This is your so-called reasoning for why the KKK displays the Confederate/rebel flag? Unbelievable!

You really do live a dream would and must be the clone of another neo-Confederate who makes identical bombastic statements.

Why is the Klan flying the rebel flag at their 'rallies'?

Do you consider the KKK a domestic terrorist group?

Nonsense. The Confederate battle flag doesn't just show up at KKK rallies, someone brings it. And I'll bet you a plate of grits, that person doesn't have a general hatred of the South, but rather an inbred hatred of the North.

Here's a story for you, mac. Extracted from Link. Espinola, now you'll know the real reason I wear a "brass rat" is to remind me of this story -- LOL.

Y'all are a bunch of cantankerous folks. Ever since that Flag issue, the world knows how cantankerous you are. I remember a story from a long time ago about an old Mississippi boy. He was a son of a Confederate Soldier. And he was from somewhere down around Sullivan's Hollow. You know - people like Carl Ford are from there! Crazy people live down there! [Laughter] And, anyway, he was just a cantankerous old fellow. He was raised on the milk of Yankee hatred because his father just detested those old Yankees and the way they treated Mississippi and the South. And, as the man got older, he got more cranky. Well, of course, Jones County came into the modern part of the world, and they wanted to get rid of this guy. So, they decided that the thing to do was to take this guy that hates the Yankees and send him to the Mecca of American culture and learning. "We'll send him to Boston, Massachusetts, on vacation! We'll cure this man!"

So, they pack him up and send him off to Boston. He got up there to Boston. He walked around up there and started to interact with those people, and he was totally confused. Every time he wanted to eat dinner, they tried to eat lunch, and every time he wanted supper, they wanted dinner. He was confused. About the second day up there, he was rudely informed that they "don't grow grits up here." [Laughter] People were barking at him, and he said they talked faster than he even cared to think. "There's something wrong with them!" [Laughter]

After a couple of days of pulling his hair out, trying to deal with these Yankees, he finally decided to go back into a little dark alley in Boston, looking around, and he saw a curio shop, an antique shop, and it was run by a Chinaman. He said, "Thank God! There ain't a Yankee in there! [Laughter] He goes into this little antique shop and looks around. He didn't find anything very interesting to him, but, all of a sudden, right before he left, he saw this big, pretty, brass rat. He looked at that brass rat, and said, "You know, I need a memento of my trip to Yankeeland, and this brass rat is the sure thing. I will always remember Yankees when I see this brass rat!"

So, he grabbed the rat and ran and placed it on the counter. And the Chinaman said, "Ah, so! You want brass rat! You want brass rat!" "Yes, I'd like to buy the rat. How much is it?" "Oh, the rat! The rat! The rat is ten dollar. The rat is ten dollar. The story about the rat is a hundred dollar!" [Laughter]

"The story about the rat? Naw, naw. I might be from Mississippi, but I'm not stupid! Here's your ten dollars. I bought the rat. You keep the story." And he takes off down the street.

He's walking down the street with the brass rat under his arm. It's a pretty old thing. All of sudden, he hears a noise behind him. He looks around behind him, and there's a bunch of rats following him! [Laughter] Well, how about that? So, he goes a little faster, and, all of a sudden he looks down there and there's more rats following him! He goes, "Oh, my God! Where are all these rats going?" He takes off, just kinda getting into a jog, you know, just to get away from these rats. And he looked down and there were thousands of rats following him and that brass rat under his arm!

He said, "There ain't but one thing to do! I'm going to head over here to where those Yankees threw that tea into the harbor during the Boston Tea Party, and I'm gonna get rid of these rats!"

So, he runs down to the edge of the pier, with all these rats behind him, and he takes that brass rat and flings it out into the middle of the harbor. Every rat followed that brass rat right into the ocean and they all drowned. He looked at that, looked at all those dead rats, looked back at Boston, and started smiling.

He went back to the curio shop. He got in the door and the Chinaman said, "Ah, you want story! You want story!" The ol' Mississippi boy said, "Man, I don't want no damn story! I was just wondering. Do you happen to have a brass Yankee?"

Bookmark bump for your post about the UDC and other heritage groups' objections to politicization of the Battle Flag.

Please bookmark and post a link anytime any of the Pavlovian seminar trolls try to bracket the Southern colors with segregationist politicians and the Ku Klux Klan as usual. (Notwithstanding the Indiana Klan was one of the very strongest and best-connected divisions of the Invisible Empire in the 1920's.)

What they are really after is getting the symbols and the memories of the South consigned to an Orwellian "memory hole", so that when one of these clowns tells you his motivations are "100% American", you can remind everyone on the thread that what Orwell described in 1984 was in no way American.

Anyone engaged in "memory-hole" uses of history and distortions of it, imposition of modern political agenda on it, is not "100% American". To the extent that they do that kind of thing, people like that are Orwellian, Kafkaesque "NewThinkers" and not old-fashioned American patriots.

you can even have HITLERY Rodham Klintoon as your Dowager EMPERESS!

Stand, I recommend the title "Empress of the Night" as a title for Hitlery.

Alternatively, how about "Empress of the Black Widows"? That has a nice ring to it. 'Cept Slick ain't dead yet.

You like pictures? What about this one?

Or these? [from http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/022601/dsf_5481765.html]

Atlantan Gerry Turner, 30, has been participating in Civil War reenactments for six years.

Brandon Cody (left), 14, of Cottonwood, Ala.; Andrew Bracken, 14, of Fort Pierce; Kenny Smith, 14, of Cottonwood; and Chris Gomez of South Florida fought in last weekend's Battle of Olustee reenactment.

Or what about Harry Hervery, and his brother Anthony?

"[Anthony] Hervey's devotion to the flag began when he discovered that a great-great-uncle, James Hervey, was a black American who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. James Hervey served in the Army of Mississippi and was killed at the battle of Shiloh." (The Sun Herald, 22 Jun 2000)

A Southerner probably showed them up once and it set them off. Probably some sleazy two-bit, Forex trader in New York City named Mark who would laugh his arse off if he ever saw a group of Christians praying on the streets of NYC.
