OK..here's what we know..Senate is in recess for the weekly party caucus luncheons. Supposed to resume at 2:15. on C-span 2.. The Foreign Relations committee is supposed to meet at 2:45 to vote on the Bolton nomination. Lugar has refused requests for a delay. Just before the Senate recessed, Reid objected to Frist's UC request for the Froeign Relations committee to meet today. Frist withdrew his request..
Exactly. If you think we're outraged today, just wait till we get to some judges.

I know I am a lone voice and my measley donation doesn't amount to much, but dammit, it felt good.....I also worked hard for 2004 and believed in getting a bigger majority, but what I witnessed today was very upsetting....I'll spend my RNC money on more goodies for my 3yo grandson....he, at least appreciates it.

Voinivich just humiliated Lugar. If I were him, I'd be looking for payback. But it's Lugar so who knows how he'll take this defeat.
Right now my only desire is to kick Voinivich's butt and vote these McCain-ites out of office for good. make them pay the way the GOP should be making them pay by yanking their funding.

I disagree - this episode doesn't reflect much competence from the 'Rats, it just shows the toxic combination of RINO-weasels and ineffective R. senate leadership. Rs should have known from the Clarence Thomas hearings what the 'Rats are capable of, and should have had all their ducks in a row. Whatever is going on with Voinkovich, Lugar and Frist should have known ahead of times how things stood (or else V. is very far off the reservation). Frist and Lugar had better pull this thing together quick, else the RINOs will spin out of control and the base support for the party will seriously erode....
I agree with people who say this nomination is much more important for what it shows about R. competence and resolve in excercising majority power in the Senate than in how much we care about the f'in United Nations....

Bump to that! I've already made some calls; unfortunately at the RNC I got the voicemail, so I was probably nastier than I would have been to a live person......LOL.
At that point, Lugar knew the vote which was 10-8 at the beginning of this session, was now 9-9. The point made near the end of the session in response to Allen's question was correct. Any motion for any purpose which receives a tie vote, is defeated.
At that point, Lugar was forced to take the "unanimous" proposal, which was never voted upon, to delay the nomination for more staff work and possibly an additional Bolton appearance.
Chafee was not the weak link, this time. He faces possible primary opposition for reelection. The White House is prepared to back off the staunchly conservative challenger. But as long as that possibility exists, the White House owns Chafee, regardless of his generally squish tendencies.
Bolton is neither live, nor dead, as a nominee at this point. As Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

That's exactly right. If Lugar had stuck to his guns, and had Allen or Coleman make a vote motion at 4 PM it would have been different, I think.
please indulge me in case you've heard me say this before,but ,... our Congresscritters remind me of the geeky nerds in highschool that tried to "get with" the Rahrah slackers because they had the cute babes , today was instructive for me AGAIN , I won't forget this one

I agree with you. The most obvious problem was Voinovich, but Lugar should have been aware of what was going to happen going into the meeting. Unless the two have personal problems, somebody who was supposed to count noses didn't. Lugar got blindsided and came out looking like a fool.
At the same time I am not about to throw in the towel on this one as some seem to be. Even two years ago Bolton would not have even been a serious consideration for UN Ambassador. We are winning the war and tossing down your arms when you lose a battle is not the way to keep doing that.
Then that must be the prescription I need. Twenty minutes to go.
Oh please -- "keep them in line"? He's not a hall monitor and they aren't third-graders (they just play them on TV). They are US Senators -- each one thinks he or she is God's Gift to Government. Voinovich, for one, doesn't need Frist -- he has a very safe seat here in Ohio (sad to say).
