Second Republican Urges DeLay to Step Aside
Fox News ^ | 04/16/2005 | AP

WASHINGTON — One of Congress' most conservative members on Friday became the second House Republican to urge Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step aside because of the ethics scrutiny he's facing.

"If the majority leader were to temporarily step aside so that these trumped up charges can be dealt with in a less hostile environment, as they have proven to be an unnecessary distraction, it may be a productive move," said Rep. Tom Tancredo , R-Colo.

Tancredo, elected in 1998, said he believes all charges against DeLay, R-Texas, "lack merit" and are "being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down and with him, the Republican majority."

Was this all Tancredo had to offer? If Trancredo has a strategy, beyond the obvious, I'd appreciate if he would share it in a more straightforward manner.

Tancredo Statement on Majority Leader Tom DeLay (from his own website)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1385076/posts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tom Tancredo (CO-06) today said of embattled Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX):

“I believe that all of the charges against Tom DeLay I have seen to date lack merit. I believe they are being leveled in the hopes of brining him down, and with him the Republican Majority,” said Tancredo. “However if the Majority Leader were to temporarily step aside so that these trumped up charges can be dealt with in a less hostile environment, as they have proven to be an unnecessary distraction, it may be a productive move.”

======

Tancredo is an opportunist -- he wants his 15 minutes of fame, and doesn't care, if he destroys the Republican party by catering to the Democrats, to do it.

Just as Tancredo was building a "fan club" for his stance on illegal immigration and backing the Minuteman Project---

He goes and shoots himself in the foot---

Tom, my man, either you are with Delay or not, but John Kerry knows that you can't get away with fence sitting at times like this....

I also wouldn't want to make an enemy of Delay if all goes well and he finally sheds this hit-job on him by the dems and the MSM!

If my House Representative decides to follow Tancredo's lead he'll have some explaining to do the next time he's in town.

We don't need Republicans acting as agent for the Democrats.

Giving in to the Democrats in anticipation that they will "play nice" after that is naive... They will go into a feeding frenzy if they smell fear...

Amazing how many Freepers can be so easily manipulated by utterly biased press releases. Aren't we supposed to know better?

I think Tancredo call em as he sees em. I don't think that's good in this instance, because it played into the hands of the Democrats.

When is the GOP going to air Pelosi's dirty laundry?

Tancredo was an ass to add fuel to this fire. He's validating the con the Democrats are pulling.

No, you don't leave then prove your innocence, what you do is stay and let them attempt some proof of illegal activity if this isn't all political showboating.

Tancredo comes off like a child here lacking any form of wisdom.

A not ready for prime time player for sure.

How many Democrats called for Bill Clinton's resignation? How many called for Gary Condit's resignation?

When does Tommy have to run again? We need to deliberately run other Republicans against the weak-kneed lilly liver spineless Rinos.

So just what does he plan to do if the Dem's try to gut him with an full scale attack to destroy him because he is too conservative, step aside . . . . or expect the rest of the Republican Party to back him?

He might get REAL lonely out there by himself.

Tancredo stepped in it, big time. This is nuts. Is he really willing to throw overboard any Republican the Dems begin to attack? This shows weakness and vulnerability. The Rs need to be circling the wagons and going on offense, not playing defense to these bullies.
