OCHESTER, N.Y. - A lawyer shot himself to death as jurors began deliberating whether he sexually assaulted two foster children he had been assigned to protect, authorities said Wednesday.
Andrew Dunn, 40, a law guardian for children appearing in Rochester's family court, didn't arrive at his trial Tuesday, setting off a manhunt that ended later that day when troopers found his body on an embankment next to a creek.
Dunn shot himself in the head with a 9-mm rifle he took from his brother's home, where he had been staying, and left a brief note that did not address his guilt or innocence, said William John, a senior investigator with the state police.
Dunn was accused of sodomizing and sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy in 2002 and another boy from 1997 to 2003, when the child turned 13.
Jurors deliberated for several hours Tuesday without reaching a verdict.
"The thing these boys wanted most was for people to believe that Mr. Dunn did the things they said he did," prosecutor Cara Briggs said. "Now they'll never have that chance."
Dunn vehemently denied the charges when he testified during the trial.
Dunn, who had posted $25,000 bond, could have been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison if convicted.
I hope that he lived long enough after the first shot to shoot himself again.
There's one I know of - the Spanish "Destroyer" cabine, so named because it was issued to Navy personnel. Fires a 9mm Largo round. But they are WWI - II surplus and pretty rare.
Actually there are 9mm rifles. I forget what brand but they are not popular because 9mm is not considered an ideal round for rifles.
There's also a little 9mm carbine with a synthetic stock that's an off brand.
Thanks all! I knew I was in the right place to get a rapid answer!
I think Marlin makes a 9mm rifle, uses S&W Mags.
I think Kel-Tec is one of those. They have a 'sporting carbine'.
I don't know. The guy shooting himself seems as good an admission of guilt as any.
Both Ruger and Hi-Point 9mm Carbines that sell quite well. They use the same mag as their pistols.
Other manufacturers make them as well.
Handy for LEO's/military due to ammo commonality.
Decent performance for CCB/self defense and plinking and handy due to the ammo commonality between the rifle/pistol.
ping.
Good riddance, laaaaaaawyer.
what a waste...
of a bullet.
Thanks to Mr. Dunn for saving the taxpayers money and other children from himself.
If only all layers would do that...
Did he ruin the environment with his biocrap falling into the riverbank?
Good riddance to such garbage. A prime example of "Life unworthy of living."
