Five people, including the head of the East St. Louis Democratic central committee, were named today in a federal indictment alleging voter fraud in 2004.
The indictment says the five took part in a conspiracy to pay voters for their votes in the Nov. 2, 2004, general election.
Named in the indictment are Charles Powell Jr., head of the city's Democratic committee, along with Jesse Lewis, Sheila Thomas and Kelvin Ellis, Democratic precinct committeemen, and Yvette Johnson, a precinct worker.
Ronald J. Tenpas, U.S. Attorney for southern Illinois, also announced that four people -- Leroy Scott Jr., Lillie Nichols, Terrance Stith and Sandra Stith -- had pleaded guilty to paying voters in the November 2004 general election at the direction of Powell.
Sentencing for those four was set for June 3. Each faces a possible sentence of five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.

There's some hope for Illinois yet.
Give them the max.
I wonder if this will make a showing on the DU Election 2004 Political Discussion board.
Let's see who rolls over on the big boys...if anyone does, they probably all will.
Is this the same group that slashed GOP's bus tires?
Why haven't I heard about this in the mainstream news? Gee, I wonder why. I DO hope I hear about this from SOME news outlet.
Man....Not a good thing.....they will be signing up every person in their prison to vote Democrat! It'll be like Christmas every day to them!
I think we should take away their food and water. Obviously their quality of life is not good because Bush won anyway.
Someone needs to try sneaking it in, My cover is blown there.
The MSM is still reviewing the dozens of CAIR press releases about the Fox TV show "24." As soon as their done with that important task, they'll move onto this issue.
That was up in Milwaukee. Those same people gave us the get-homeless-out-to-vote tactic "Smokes for Votes" in 2000. Chicago, and Metro East (the Illinois side of the St. Louis sprawl, also home of Tort Capitol Madison County) are awful as far as vote fraud, but Milwaukee does not get the credit it "deserves."
No Ann... that was in Milwaukee.
Bookmarked!
Give them the max. Vote fraud should be a 20 year crime.
Why haven't I heard about this in the mainstream news? Gee, I wonder why. I DO hope I hear about this from SOME news outlet.
no msm has to cover voter fraud on native reservations i SD before it gets to this
Has the prosecution ever asked for a change of venue?
It's a start...
Yup. A paragraph in National Review about felon voting rights that says it all.
"....States may reasonably worry that the political interests of felons as a voting bloc would be unhealthy for society at large. If we are locking up too many people, then perhaps we should soften the laws. What we should not do is force the states to compensate for the Democrats' failures in winning the votes of the law-abiding.
