Senate backs Alaska oil drilling

The US Senate has given its de facto approval to a plan to open up a remote wildlife refuge in the northern state of Alaska to oil drilling.

Senators voted 51-49 against an amendment which would have struck the measure from the federal budget.

The plan has long been a key part of President Bush's energy plan, as a means to reduce US reliance on imports.

Unfortunately, we are still not clear on this. The House has been on board with this for several years in a row, only to have the Senate block it. Now that the Senate is on board, the House is not!

DeWine. Look, it's a bad vote, but this guy, to be fair, has been on the right side of the Clinton impeachment (convict), tax cuts, the Iraq war, EVERY pro-life issue, and, I think, CFR. It would be nice if he voted 100% conservative, but that's a pretty good record, I'd say.

Republicans against:
Chafee, Coleman, Collins, DeWine, McCain, Smith (OR), Snowe

Oregon's got a LOT of environmentalists, so I am inclined to give Gordon Smith a pass. Ditto for Norm Coleman in Minnesota as well.

We still beat back the amendment, we're going to open ANWR, and so I'm willing to call it no harm, no foul.

The UNIONS wanted the drilling. The natives love the checks. The state loves the extra income.

There are no enviro bad parts to this. Nothing is going to go extinct. They'll still breed like bunnies.

What we need is another gold rush, a few saloons, a new railroad and modern day explorers to see exactly what "Seward's Folly" can give us. That's reality.

NOTHING was put on this earth for sheer beauty. Look to the stars for beauty and wonder!! The earth and its' gifts were meant for us.

Not a chance that the House won't approve drilling in ANWR. The "Hammer" will see this one through.

Oil has an international market, with all sources of supply and all end user demands affecting the world-wide price. This one addition to world-supply will put slight downward pressure on world prices for oil. If we really want much lower oil prices, then lots more sources of supply have to come on-line. Alternatively, we could demand less, which would pretty much only occur in a depression economy scenario. Virtually all reasonable conservation measures have been taken. China and India's new demand for oil is a primary driver of recent price increases. I doubt we'll see much letup in demand. So, unless you hear of many other new sources coming on stream, or we get a world-wide economic depression, get used to relatively high gas prices. I still think the modern peak price for gas was 1983 in inflation adjusted dollars. So, we're not doing to bad a $2.05, and I'll keep running my V8 quite happily, thank you.

Good excursion to US/World Economics--thanks Brad ! No, I'm not a liberal whacko who wants to take away your V8 (SUV, etc.) I simply say that I'd like to see more energy efficient cars hit US and World Market and I think it would be great to simulate research, development, production and buying of energy efficient cars through let's say tax credits to companies who produce them and to consumers who buy them. Also alternative sources to Oil have to be found sooner rather then later. I believe the World Oil Supply can last for like 60 years or so if current demand shows no sign of abating. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard some time ago.

OK...Bayh voted FOR it, and Lugar against it. Go figure.

I don't know how the President gets this stuff done, but it sure isn't with the organized support of the Senate Republicans.

It passed, which is all that mattered. A most satisfying day, what with the excellent press conference and Wolfowitz nominated to the World Bank. I shall have an adult beverage when I return from the gym. :-)

This is EXACTLY why you need a "cusion" of several conservative votes. People do have consciences, and I think DeWine is sincerely against it (I don't know why, and I think it's stupid, but I'd hate to make it impossible for an individual to vote his conscience). Rather, have so many reliable votes on ANY issue that it doesn't matter if you have a defector or two.

BTW, whazzup with AKAKA? Why did he vote for it? Not complaining, but is there something special about Hawaii I don't know?

There are a few republican senators that need to be voted out of office next time around.

Gas is probably $3/gallon and Hawaii is dependent on tourists. The price of air fare probably is going up to compensate for the rise in fuel.

Just heard on the ABC news that there is another vote later this year before this is a done deal. Is that another Senate vote or the House vote?

Nope. I sure don't.

Yep. I surely am. (and DON'T call me Shirley!)

I am a conservative - to the liberals, that is what is wrong with me.

FWIW, I'd give EVERY caribou in Alaska to gain some energy independence.
