The robustly liberal actor dismisses Internet rumors he plans to run against Connecticuts conservative Democratic senator, Joe Lieberman. "Itd be lunatic to try to get into politics at my age. I dont think Id have the stomach for it."
But he says he is worried by the policies of the Bush administration.
"I wish I felt a little more comfortable about the direction that were going," Newman said carefully. "It does not seem to be of the people, by the people and for the people. It seems to be about something else completely different.
"I think part of it is the medias fault for not being more aggressive and persistent and nasty and I think its the peoples fault for not paying attention. Thats not a good combination. It allows people in government to do pretty much what they want."

Great actor. Loved his stuff. Too bad he's getting oldtimers.
And it is hitting them too... believe it.
Ditto!
paul who?
Well said.
Newman is 79...... A little old to be starting a career in politics. As for his comments, I guess he missed the election in November.
Shakin' that bush! (no offense to the President!)
Too many pucks to the head?
True? Disgusting!
If I remember correctly even Barry Goldwater went a bit senile when he got old. I wonder if us Freepers will go senile like this. Yipes!
Jane Fonda is actually a wonderful actress... but there's no way I can watch her work. Same with Susan Surandon and Alec Baldwin, (although he usually plays characters that you dislike anyway). Great actors but it's impossible not to be biased when you watch their work.
I think the most repugnant is Chevy Chase. If you go back and look at the body of his work, in my opinion a strong anti-christian theme runs throw most of it.
I think as an actor you should be careful not to "show your cards" regardless of your political affiliation. In fact the more mysterious you are in that regard sometimes the more the draw.

I think his career wound down without him several years back.
Those of them in Rio Linda ARE stupid. ;)
As a libertarian I think Rush should be free to insert anything into any opening in his body that he so desires.
It's his life.
Just like Paul Newman should be free to fly around a track in a Corvette race car at the age of 80.
It's his life.
I agree with you about avoiding certain actors because of their lefty politics, but that's tough for me to do with Newman. He's made some GREAT movies in his time--Cool Hand Luke, Hombre, Butch & Sundance, Hud ... I won't let a an actor's politics dicate what I watch and what I won't watch. JMHO.
Advice to Newman -- keep acting, keep making salad dressing. Get out of our President's way as he changes the world and leaves you relics behind. He is making it safer for your grandkids whether you like it or not. That's his job. By the way, I haven't enjoyed you since THE STING. Redford either. If he were an environmentalist he would restore his ski resort to its natural state. Hypocritical leftist bastards.
Ditto. It's just sad that people have to let politics dictate every facet of their life. I don't care if Paul Newman is a card carrying commie, the man is a stud, a true patriot and a gentleman.
