In the Womb
National Geographic Channel | 3/06/05 | me

Terrific program on tonight about life in the womb from conception to ??? (I'm still watching it with fascination). Those who geT cable or satellite, check your guides. It's a 2 hr program and apparently repeats at least once tonight on National Geographic channel. Much more advanced than the old PBS program ... terrific visuals from conception on, commentary on complexity of it all, you get the picture.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This program was awesome! I would like to have our government schools show THIS in the classroom. This would show our children that the baby is alive soon after conception. Might change some of their minds when thinking about abortion or even having sex.

I'm glad to hear it was so good. I have it ready to watch on my DVR, and will probably save it for a while (until my girls are ready for it). Maybe we'll watch parts of it after my DH and I screen it.

This program was the most informative baby-related program I have ever seen. I watched it with my 6 1/2 month pregnant wife and we loved it!

Do you mean your girls might not be old enough to watch it? If so, I wouldn't have hestitated to have any of my children (fully grown now, so the point is moot for me!) watch it, regardless of their age at the time. The program is not exploitive or preachy in any way - it simply shows how miraculous conception and the development of the fetus in the womb truly is.

If I misunderstood your meaning, my apologies.

This should be a program that all our children should watch around the age of twelve or thirteen. The public schools would do more to stop abortion by showing how early in the process a fetus begins to look human.I learned a lot about the development of a baby from this program and I'm sure teenagers would to.Many people are under the impression that an abortion at six weeks is the removal of an unformed blob but in reality it is a tiny little baby with eyes and arms and legs in development. It was pretty amazing to watch.

Agree totally. My husband is insisting that I write to NG to tell them what an awesome program it is.

I think that they are a bit young. (They are 6 and 3.) I will probably let them see some of it, but the beginning gives a bit more information on how conception happens than I'm comfortable sharing with them right now. I've heard that we witness the birth, as well, which is another thing that I'm not comfortable with for them. My 3 y.o. doesn't even fathom how a baby gets out, and my 6 y.o. has a vague idea that there is a birth canal. Where that is, she doesn't yet know. But I'm watching parts of it right now, and it's really amazing. A VERY Pro Life statement (which is not hard, since really, our bodies are made to be so). BTW, no need to apologize. I'm a bit protective of my girls, and I try hard to strike a balance between answering their questions and giving too much information. Or, what I should say is, I ride that fence. I answer as best I can without giving more information than they really are asking for. I wouldn't get into a menstrual cycle with them just because they find (ahem) feminine products in a drawer in my bathroom! LOL I know different people go at different paces for this, and I've known people who let their older children watch their baby brother or sister being born. For us, well...let's just say it's not our style. :)

Judging by another thread today, you've got about four or five more years in which to enlighten your six-year-old, thanks to the earlier onset of puberty in American girls.

My family watched this twice, including my 7 and 2 year old girls.

My only complaint is that at one point, the baby was described as "parasitic." I don't remember the exact way that term was used in the sentence, but will try to hear it again if I ever see it again.

A baby is not parasitic, as his mother's womb is the place he comes into being in this world. A parasite would be an outside creature latching on to someone.

I remember noting that particular '...parasitic...' phraseology whilst watching the program. Though I'll concede your point that "...his mother's womb is the place he comes into being ...", I will make the following observation:

One of the truly miraculous things about human (and all other mammals, for that matter) reproduction is the ability of the fetus to exist within the womb. After all, it is a 'foreign body' in that it genetically is different than the the hosting mother - due to the modification represented by the the father's genetic contribution - that is receiving sustenance from the mother. In that sense the fetus is parasitic.

I have heard it stated that most miscarriages occur because the pregnant mother has a more robust and vigorous immune response to this 'foreign body' and her body rejects it. So in that sense another of the true miracles of human reproduction is that the immune response is muted enough to allow the pregnancy to go to term.

Simply stated the fetal tissue steals what it needs from the maternal blood to develop lungs, kidneys, intestines, a stomach, breath... and shuffles the remainder back into the mother's system. Hence, a parasite.
