Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
Yep, Jefferson bible folks, perhaps.
God should be the most important thing in your life and if you loved your kids half as much you would know that standing firm in your love of Jesus is loving them.
Jesus was offensive. Most people were offended by him. The proof for John the Baptist that Jesus was the Christ was that the blind see, the lame walk and the majority are "offended" by Him (Mat. 11:2-19). As Jesus said, "Blessed is he who is not offended because of Me" (Mat. 11:6; Luke 7:23).
If your stance for Jesus offends them, so be it.
In Galilee, Jesus did not plead with his neighbors to understand Him when "they were offended at Him" (Mat. 13:57; Mark 6:3). If unbelievers are offended, so be it (cf. Luke 14:3-4; John 5:8-16). "Shake off the dust from your feet" (Mat. 10:14). But alas, that is no longer a Christian attitude it seems...
Thanks for all the info (read "ammo").
He is a perfect hypocrite.
Enjoy your dinner. :-)
Christs apostles asked Him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard [Your] saying?" (Mat. 15:12). What is the accepted Christian response today after an offense is taken? Quick, apologize! Ask for forgiveness! Tell them you are sorry. How did Jesus respond? He said to ignore the complaints of the unbelievers: "Let them alone. They are blind," (Mat. 15:14). Today, many Christians condemn Christs attitude as unloving.
RE: "Are you a Christophobe too?"
Uh, no. I'm a Christian myself, one of the God will judge whom He chooses to judge, stay out of other people's business here on Earth variety.
Christophobe? Heavens, no. But I do think that Christians and gays (and the two are not mutually exclusive either) here in America should either try to live in peace and harmony, or leave each other the hell alone.
RE: "I suggest just because you don't care for some of those who claim to speak for it that you don't automatically throw out the baby with the bathwater"
Misdirection on your part. It's Alan Keyes who threw the baby out with the bathwater...HIS baby.
It's Keyes who let his hatred of homosexuals in general lead him to betray the affections of his own blood. What are we still here for if not to procreate and perpeuate our species, and await the return of Christ the best way that we can manage to? Children are our cruel species reason for being in the first place, and Keyes turned on his own child so that he could save public face with his more radical supporters. That's disgusting, whatisthetruth.
That's ugly.
Be honest, don't care either way because none of it is going to happen, but that aside, it's more of a comment on the psychology of certain Christians who seem take at some level some sort of odd pleasure in the idea that the immoral (usually defined primarily in terms of sexual behavior) are going to burn in hell forever. It's like the Adelphia Cable executives who wouldn't carry porn channels for morality reasons but saw no problem with embezzlement and fraud.
First, please thank your son for his service to our country. I pray for his safe return home.
I don't think you want to play this "my kid is better than your kid" game with me, do you? Both of my children are equally special and important to me.
My daughter is an over-achiever, in both academics and sports. She got a full ride at Ohio State, and was All-Academic Big 10 four years running. While there, she met and developed friendships with some of the greats in the sports-world. More importantly, she came out of it with 3 degrees, after much blood, sweat and tears. My son in law is completing his MBA, while working for a major firm making 6 figures. But the best thing I can say about them, is they are a loving married couple, happy, and secure. The fact that she converted him to being a Conservative Republican is the icing on the cake...:)
My son has an amazing artistic talent. He is more like me, not taking life too seriously, but being responsible at the same time. He has the soul of an angel, would give someone the shirt off of his back, and has found the woman of his dreams. It took him awhile to find his direction in life, and during that time, he lived with me. Did I charge him rent? Of course not. I had faith in him that he was destined for something special, and he has proved me right.
I would do anything for my children. They would do anything for me. "Turn them out" at 18? No way. It wasn't an issue with my daughter, but it was with my son. During the years he lived with me after the age of 18, he did so much for me. He was there after my back surgery, waiting on me hand and foot. He was there for me last May after the death of my dear daddy.
I raised him to respect women, and now his girlfriend will reap the benefits.
All I can do now is sit back and wait for my first grandchild.
Wow, what a concept...
Ahhhhhhhhh, I can't believe I didn't add that. Thanks for the correction. :-)
Your post is disgusting, and ugly.
The point is rather a large number of people engage in other sexual acts which are listed as sins. Probably more than 50% of the population.
Am I to believe no one on this thread has a family member or has himself committed one of these acts and therefore deserves to be kicked out of their home?
Parents are to discipline their children.
Proverbs: "Spare the rod and spoil the child."
That discipline comes in many forms, such as excommunication.
1 Corinthians 5:
11But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not even to eat with such a person.
That is what Alan Keyes is doing. Tough love.
It's always wise to first determine whether the recipient of your lecture is of the same faith as you. Because if they aren't, the point is lost.
The simple issue is, that I most certainly would not kick my kids out of the house or disown them because they "sin". See, I'm not perfect. I aspire to conduct my life as G-d would have me do. But I am not pompous or arrogant enough to condemn sinners so vociferously while being a sinner myself. That would smack of hypocrisy and would not go unnoticed by my children.
They would know that I disapprove..they would know that I love them...they would know that they have a home, always...Much more importantly, the fundamental question is whether or not we believe that a person is "born" homosexual or whether it is a developmental trait.
RE: "The fundies are no match for me. I try to have
an open mind."
I just don't understand all of the hatred those guys sling around here over nothing so much as someone else's sexual choices. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Nobody (but NOBODY) has the right to tell two (or three or whatever) grown, mentally capable adults what they can do to each other in their own bedrooms here in America. Freedom of speech means dick if unpopular speech isn't protected by it, and one cannot espouse limited government influence on the lives of individuals and support the bedroom police either. It is inconsistent t the point of lunacy.
If you listen to what some of these morons have to say you'd think that homosexuals are a threat to America on the level of the Islamo-Fascists and terrorists and should all be locked up as a threat t national security.
Without a correct interpretation and understanding of Christian doctrine I can't fault you for feeling this way about your kids because without it anything goes. However if you were a Christian as is Alan Keyes then this feeling would be in error.
The most important relationship should be the one with God, not with your kids and Keyes is following that dictum. If there's nothing your kids could ever do that would make you throw them out then either you have really good kids or you'd be willing to compromise what's right for what's wrong. I can't see any other option.
Me think they have written their own bible. They certainly have made up their own religion.
Look, you attacked me first by saying I was somehow beneath you because I make my children responsible for their own lives at 18 years of age.
I was simply showing you that it works. They don't hate me, I haven't disowned them nor them me. Keyes, as well as I, believe adult children are responsible for their own decisions. Hopefully they make good ones - often they don't. But, it is not his responsibily to feed, clothe, educate or in anyway support her. The Gay lifestyle aspect of this thread is just another example of an adult child making their own decision. Frankly it is none of our business if he dissapproves and makes her responsible. It is Godly and it is right.
Who are these holier-than-thou people you are talking about? Their names?
What standard are you using to JUDGE them so harshly by?
Why do you think they (in your words) hate those people they have never met?
Who are these people people they have never met? Their names?
No one takes pleasure in the fact that unrepentent sinners will live forever in hell. Maybe that is the way you want to envision Christians so you can make your own self appear to be more moral and self righteous, but it is not a reality that God fearing Christians who understand the horrors of hell would take pleasure in anyone going there. On the contrary, we know how horrible it will be and desire to warn and to offer the Gospel so it may possibly be avoided.
Hatred of homosexuals? I see a man the recognises God's law and loves his daughter enough to show her that he cares about how she lives in accordance to that law. Sometimes you have to do tough love.
I will relate this to a personal story about myself. I went through a stage of rebellion myself and turned to drink and party and late nights. My mother (she raised us three kids by herself) warned me that I was not to do those things while living under her roof. One night I came home late around 2 am and the house/gate was locked. There was a note on the gate, that basically said, "you no longer live here". I now understood that my mother meant business, I begged her forgiveness (slept in the car) and she forgave me. I never did those things again under her roof. She didn't turn me out because she hated me, she loved me with all of her heart. But she raised me to love the Lord the best she could and that was her value system.
