Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
Yes, the Keyes-bashing Christians should memorize that one. Maybe it'd do some good.
Your take on this is totally correct take on this whole affair (no pun intended).
As a parent, I feel it is my responsibility to turn my kids out when they are 18, or they can stay and contribute to the household finances.
I'm sure that's not an opinion favored by most, but my 5 adult children (ages 18 - 28) have all ended up in an advantageous position because of their own drive, desire, and fortitude. It possibly had something to do with me not condoning their sin.
And those of you who are equating her lesbianism with rape are so ridiculous you are an embarrassment to Republicans everywhere.
With all due respect, the above statement contradicts your statement to follow. In the following statement you seem to make the point that all sins are equal, but when rape is equated to homosexuality on the sin scale, you protest. Sadly, you have been confused and deceived by liberal religion. All sin is not equal, which is why there are differing punishments for more agregious sins, and is why those whom God sends to hell will have their station in hell determined by the veracity and the seriuousness of their sin.
Everyone is a sinner but I guess you all think your sins are better than hers. More acceptable.

It seems as if there may be an implicit contract in allowing her to apply without asking for a scholarship in the first place. I'm not a lawyer, but another student _was_ denied admission based on Brown accepting her. Her only reason for needing a scholarship now is because her father changed his mind.

It doesn't help that her brother is apparently sabotaging the parents efforts by giving her a place to live.
I share your negative bias. There seems something fishy about him but I haven't followed all the details of his previous history.

You do not bend God's Word to gain party favor. I'm quite suprised so many 'Christians' are absolutely gleeful about a man disowning his daughter instead of praying for the whole family. Disowning one's own family member is neither Christian or conservative. But it's evident it's quite the Republican thing to do..What's next? Hunting down every family member who we feel is not living the Christian lifestyle and show them tough love? BUT, even if se does, will Dr. Keyes know or care? If it is correct as the article said, broke off all communication then I feel he has gone a step too far.
Out of the house, and no more financial support are appropriate.
However, cutting off all communication? Not even the Prodigal's father went that far.
On homosexuality? Christianity? What Keyes did? What his daughter did? And like what possessed you to post on this thread in such short hard to grasp hit and run verbiage?
