Wal-Mart unit rejects union representation

Colo. workers vote 17-1; labor group wants results thrown outThe Associated Press

LOVELAND, Colo. - Workers at a Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express voted 17-1 against union representation Friday, rejecting efforts to establish what would have been the first union United Food and Commercial Workers spokesman Dave Minshall said the group will ask the National Labor Relations Board to throw the results out, saying no union member was allowed to observe the election and Wal-Mart added employees to the unit to dilute the strength of the union supporters.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman Christi Gallagher said the union was offered an opportunity to provide a substitute observer but could not find one. She said any workers added to the operation were a response to business needs and not part of an anti-union effort.

Minshall said workers had been subjected to intimidation and harassment before the vote. Josh Noble, a tire shop worker who said he voted in favor of the UFCW, said he had been harassed by other Wal-Mart employees and that managers “kind of blew it off” when he reported one incident.

“It’s fear that won this election for Wal-Mart,” Minshall said.

Gallagher said she could not comment on incidents reported by employees or the way in which they were handled, but she said the company does not tolerate harassment or discrimination.

Wal-Mart had objected to even holding the vote, saying the Tire & Lube Express was not a stand-alone operation but only a department of the larger store.

That union tried the same thing in Thompson, Manitoba, and even managed to get another vote, which was rejected a second time as well. Unionism had cost that town enough grief in the past, they just can't get it through their heads.

I'm happy with this outcome.

In today's world, unions are strictly parasites...Union leaders feast on the wages of workers, destroy jobs and businesses, create hardship....and when the companies finally fold, these wretched people look for other victims.

FORMER UNITES STATES STEEL WORKER!

The union claims that Walmart added additional workers to the unit to "dilute" the vote...the union got ONE vote! How the union goon make such a silly claim with a straight face?

10-4 !!! They are nothing BUT parasites (with democrat party alegiances).

I recall when Mason-Dixon truck lines warned the union not to strike because the buisness climate and their financial condition was such that they could not with stand it. A driver for them told me, "The company is lying, they have plenty of money." (which is what his union leaches were telling him).

They went on strike...six weeks later Mason-Dixon went under...they ALL lost their jobs...I saw that driver about six months later working for a small line. He said, "I had no idea people worked this hard for this little money".

I replied, "You should have counted your blessings instead of listing to UNION THUGS".

Bottom line, Unions are a business. They have to profit in order to live. When it comes to arbitration, the employees are the ones that lose.

Unions died when the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republic self immolated.

I'll second that!

Try get a union to push a grienvence through to arbritration these days. They WON'T do it, because it costs money. Union dues aren't for the members benefit anymore, they are for the activists in the national office to squander on their political activism, which is isn't neccesarily the dues payers beliefs. That type of spending by unions should be outlawed.

If the result is anything like when the Teamsters tried to unionize a plant I worked, (the union thugs got two votes and both times rejected) their next step will be to start calling in bomb threats every other day.

I am not crazy about Wal Mart putting competitors out of business using subversive tactics (and I do believe with reason that they do that) but Unions are an anachronism.

Unions are exactly run by parasites largely, and they hurt businesses and the economy more than they help. Only short sighted self centered people with no concern for posterity would seriously deny that.

Not to mention the 6 that accidently voted for Pat Buchanan.

Just for the record, I am 100% anti-union.

There was a short time when the concept was decent and aimed at protecting abuses to workers. But the concept has turned into an abuse in itself.

Unions are another fine example of how liberalism is a contradiction of logic. If a union's purpose were solely to protect and serve as a voice for workers (and all that other false altruistic socialist BS), then they should do so as a not-for-profit, unpaid entity.

Many union leaders are some of the weathiest people in the country, making their income off the backs of the working people they claim to protect. Few of their workers have the same health care and retirement benefits that the leaders have.

That should be 'union supporter.' There was only one.

Same thing happened in our little town. We had a rubber plant that had withstood strike after strike. They told the union if they had another strike they would have to close because they could not afford it. The union did not believe them and had another strike. The company was forced to close. It was our town's biggest employer.

Supporters? Supporters? Unless he is counting the jock straps in sporting goods, I only see one union supporter in that election.

The Union tried at my company and failed. Our employees don't need union representation because they can represent themselves in their own grievances. If they don't get satisfaction with their supervisors, they can go to the department manager or they can come to HR. Some of our employees walk right into the office of the Number 2 guy and voice themselves.
