Probably just thought he was eating a hot dog. I seriously doubt he could tell the difference between reality and fantasy anymore. One screwed up guy. He's probably been dead for practical purposes for years. It's actually quite amazing he took so many drugs and lived this long.

Anyhow, I pray for his family and wish them well.

From HST's final column.

"Shotgun Golf was invented in the ominous summer of 2004 AD, right here at the Owl Farm in Woody Creek, Colo. The first game was played between me and Sheriff Bob Braudis, on the ancient Bomb & Shooting Range of the Woody Creek Rod & Gun Club. It was witnessed by many members and other invited guests, and filmed for historical purposes by Dr. Thompson on Super-Beta videotape.

"The game consists of one golfer, one shooter and a field judge. The purpose of the game is to shoot your opponent's high-flying golf ball out of the air with a finely-tuned 12-gauge shotgun, thus preventing him (your opponent) from lofting a 9-iron approach shot onto a distant "green" and making a "hole in one." Points are scored by blasting your opponent's shiny new Titleist out of the air and causing his shot to fail miserably. That earns you two points. But if you miss and your enemy holes out, he (or she) wins two points when his ball hits and stays on the green.

"And after that, you trade places and equipment, and move on to round 2."

Thanks for your thoughtful post.

Abbie Hoffman lived the last years of his life, and died, here in my neighborhood in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was involved in several local "causes", most notably a protest against "the pump" which was a project to divert water from the Delaware River to a nuclear power plant.

He was actually fairly low-key and had definitely matured out of the fire and brimstone stuff of his youth. I got the feeling he wanted to be left alone but couldn't escape his notoriety. (I never met the man - - but he occasionally popped up in the pages of our local paper, the Courier Times of Bucks County.)

By the way, I saw Rennie Davis speak at Penn State back in the early '70s. He mesmerized his audience with tales of secret "laaaaaaser beeeeeeams!!!" being used by the military in Vietnam. I understand he's a stockbroker these days.

Admirable restraint, given the heated circumstances of our back and forth in this thread. I'm willing to bet that we probably agree on far more than we disagree, at the end of the day. Peace.

The bad thing about these things is that we will probably get replies calling us names or taking sides for quite a while even though we are done. LOL.

You're undoubtedly right.

PEACE HAS BROKEN OUT, FOLKS! THE FLAGS HAVE BEEN FURLED AND A CEASE-FIRE DECLARED!

Doubt that will help, but, alas, I tried...LOL

I've never heard of this guy Hal.

That's okay. Drudge didn't who who he was either, until recently.

It was a Seventies thing. You had to be there to appreciate it, but most of us have grown up and moved on since then. A strong "personality cult" continued to surround Thompson for 30+ years, even as his writing talents diminished.

You are probably younger that those of us who remember Thompson back in his heyday - or you were behaving better than we were back then!
