You may be remembering the suicide of Gary Webb, the reporter who broke the San Jose Mercury News articles about the CIA selling crack in Watts. He shot himself in the head on December 13.

It was pretty interesting, though I could have done without the buck-naked picture of its author on the back cover jacket.
