His column/writings on espn.com made him seem like a garden variety pompous liberal and he was painfully unreadable. However if this is true it's very sad.

Oops, me bad, mixing Nick cage and Johnny Depp movies. :-o

He was a most unusual fella. Some of his stuff I liked a lot I didn't.
I have to say though Bill Murray captured him pretty well in "Where the Buffalo Roam".
This guy seemed to have done a great deal of drugs and drank prodigious amounts of alcohol also.
I am surprised he wasn't dead a long time ago from substance abuse.
Hate to think he committed suicide. I wonder if he was on something that prompted him to do this or he was suffering from severe depression. Guess we will know something later.
When "Doonesbury" was really funny, way back in the day, my favorite character was Duke, based on Thompson no less.
Very sad.

You may be thinking of Spalding Gray.

"Hunter Thompson: I think George Washington owned guns. I've never seen any contradiction with that. I'm not a liberal, by the way. I think that's what's wrong with liberals. I believe I have every right to have guns. I just bought another huge weapon. A lot of people shouldn't own guns. I should. I have a safety record. Guns are a lot of fun out here."Prayers for Hunter and his loved ones
Rest In Peace Hunter
