Same could be said of Ted Bundy. Nice try, but no sale.

Insofar as it represents a deeper philosophical perspective.

Oh please, judge him on his work, there are one hell of a lot of good christian right wing guys with skeletons in their closets.
If you read Fear and Loathing or Curse of Lono or any other books and didn't enjoy them, then there ain't much you'd enjoy.
He probably was a mean, crusty old bastard who pissed lots of folks off, but, boy could he write. And he could hold his drugs better than anyone else!

Spalding Gray committed suicide? I really enjoyed Swimming to Cambodia and Monster in a Box.

I'm serious, though. I coulda SWORE I heard of this a couple of months ago, shortly after the election, in fact.
You may be remembering the suicide of Gary Webb, the reporter who broke the San Jose Mercury News articles about the CIA selling crack in Watts. He shot himself in the head on December 13.

Not even the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler ever shocked me so badly as these photographs [of Abu Gharib] did. I am ashamed to carry an American passport. Wow. It looks like Mohammed Atta will have a new roommate.

"Exactly. Hunter has been tilting at Nixon for the past three decades in quixotic, imptent rage." Pretty good line there. Too bad, the guy was entertaining and he did evidently support the 2nd amendment 'till the very end.

Stunning coincidence.... I just posted the same thought elsewhere.

I actually read large portions of his last anthology,
Empire of Fear. It was pretty interesting, though I could have done without the buck-naked picture of its author on the back cover jacket.
(Shudder.)

I don't remember the specifics, aside from "found dead of single gunshot... in trailer".
One has to be an awfully good shooter to get off a double tap in such circumstances.

Even though I'm sure no one on this site agrees with the sentiment you know this is funny. "Four more years of George Bush will be like four more years of syphilis" Just substitute Bill Clinton for George Bush and you will laugh.

Swimming to Cambodia was great.
Swimming to Long Island gave him some trouble.
