GEFFEN UNLOADS ON HILLARY: 'SHE CAN'T WIN'
Thu Feb 17 2005 23:13:00 ET

Sen. Hillary Clinton should not count on help from Hollywood mogul David Geffen in her possible run for the White House.

Geffen, who was a generous supporter and pal of Bill Clinton when he was president, trashed Hillary's prospects last night during a Q&A at the 92nd St. Y in New York City.

"She can't win, and she's an incredibly polarizing figure," the billionaire Democrat told his audience. "And ambition is just not a good enough reason."

Lloyd Grove reports in fresh editions of the NY DAILY NEWS the audience broke with "hearty applause" over Geffen's comments.

HA! Simultaneous posts about Hillary's physique. Go figure . . . (sorry!) I get carried away in this particular idiom.

Republicans largely split in '92 over taxes.

They didn't vote for Clinton in large number, but they split to perot or stayed home. Look for a third candidate to be promoted by the press if Hill is nominated. She'll make waves on immigration. Hoping to make that the straw that breaks the GOP back as "Read MY Lips" did in '92.

Too many varibles to know if that'll work a second time. I'm certain its the top strategy. Of course it's open to change if the political environment changes.

Will she even be the Dem candidate? That I'm not yet convinced of.

While I see your point about the criminal baggage, I can't think of anybody in the senate to whom the term 'grotesque narcissicism' applies more accurately than to Boxer. To me she makes Hillary look positively demure. But Boxer for president is interesting though. She'll appeal to the dem base in the primaries in a very Howard Dean sort of way. The DU type people will swoon. Her chances in the general election are less optimistic though. Her main problems; 1. She's a twit. Not even the MSM will be able to pass her off as an intelligent human being. 2. She's to the left of Ted Kennedy. 3. She's a loon.

I hope she makes a run at it though. It will be enourmously entertaining.

We had 8 years of Bill because conservatives underestimated the Clintons.

That may be true, but the differences between then and now are staggering.

Talk radio and internet were in their infancy then.

Poppy Bush was a weak candidate - he didn't really care if he won or not.

Perot was clintbilly's winning card.

All that said, I'm SO grateful that Poppy Bush lost. His son is a MUCH better president! We would NOT have had Bush/Cheney if 41 had won a second term.

"Talk radio and internet were in their infancy then."

The rise of the bloggers must be Hills big worry for '08. The Msm may let her 'listen', but the bloggers won't.

"Will she even be the Dem candidate?"

Meaning she'll be the candidate of another party? Or that she won't run?

Meaning that I'm not convinced she'll be selected in the Dem primary. It depends how nutty her base gets.

Here's wondering if this "hearty applause" will be dutifully removed like was the cascade of thunderous boos for Hillary at the New York City 9-11 Concert!

Aside from the hyperbole I think Boxer shouldn't be underestimated. This is the same mistake people made with the Clintons in the early years. What I'm saying is that Boxer actually has principles, regardless of whether or not they are something you agree with, whereas the Clintons do not other than themselves and some bizarre bedrock utopian vision that appeals only to their friends on the insider cocktail party circuit.

Generally I would say Boxer couldn't win, but conceivebly she could if the republicans somehow divide themselves between the far right and moderates and we get another ross perot sceniario.

Such as challenging the Electoral College vote even though Bush won Ohio by 119,000 votes? By putting words into Condi Rice's mouth?

You are mistaking delusions for principles.

While I don't agree with those decisions I don't think these are necessarily 'unprincipled' things to do. What I do have a problem with in politics is all of the backroom dealing, which the Clintons have made careers on. I don't have a problem with political opponents as long as they are upfront. At least you know what you're dealing with.

Sorry, but Boxer sliming Condi was hardly upfront. Boxer is a snake, pure and simple.

What I'm saying is that she did it on national television. Condi knows how to take care of herself. In washington there are a million ways to trash an opponent without directly confronting them. I prefer to see open confrontations rather than the creepy Clinton method of sending out an army of surrogates to trash people.

We were watching the Westminster Dog Show the other night and I mentioned if Hillery had to quit politics she could always be a dog handler.

In 4 years, we'll come off of 8 years of the GOP in charge of the Presidency, control of both houses, etc... All Bayh has to do is portray himself as a moderate, he's an attractive candidate, can talk about a need for change, will have the media firmly in his camp...

The way I see it, it's almost his for the taking...We just barely beat Kerry with an incumbent President in a time of war... There's no way we will pull out another victory next time, unless... Hillary gets nominated.

Bayh will squash Rudy or McCain, run to the right of Romney (paint him as another Mass. liberal), Owen and Allen will still be relative unknowns... Jeb won't even try for it...

Who else?
