Sudden Rises in HIV Levels No Concern, Report Says
Tue Feb 15, 2005 04:05 PM ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Sudden jumps of HIV levels in patients taking drugs for the AIDS-causing infection are harmless blips and do not mean the treatment against the virus is losing its punch, a report said on Tuesday.

"These results should provide relief to hundreds of thousands of HIV-positive patients in the United States currently taking drug therapy, called highly active anti-retroviral therapy ... and reassure them that their medications have not failed," said Robert Siliciano, a doctor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who was involved in the study.

The study from the Baltimore institution published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association found that the blips are mathematical variations stemming from the test used to gauge the amount of virus in the body.

The researchers said they analyzed blood samples from 10 HIV-positive patients, taking samples every two to three days for three months.

A statistical analysis found that blips occurred in nine of the 10 patients and typically lasted less than three days. The tests found no mutations taking place, the study said.

"The lack of any consistency among the tests performed on blood samples confirms that there is no danger from these blips in viral load," said the study's lead author, Richard Nettles.

"These blips can be attributed to random statistical artifact inherent in measurements of very low amounts of virus," he added.

The authors also said the blips do not warrant changes in the course of drugs being taken by patients.

This reminds me of another article. There is a strain of HIV- thats brings full blown AIDS in three months. It is completely resistant to medication.

Maybe I should re-think my plan of committing sodomy with hundreds of people while under the influence of crystal meth.

Viruses mutate. People who are infected have different types of strains.

Each case is different. That's why there will never be a medical cure for AIDS. Except of course, for monogamous heterosexual sex with one partner.

Nah, there's no reason for concern. Nor should the world be concerned that organ grinders are spreading a new superstrain and they'll be DROPPING LIKE FLIES in a year or two. No cause for concern.

Leave it to Reuters to pump this out of the MSM sewer.

[sarcasm]That is just an urban legend...it is also a blip that can be attributed to random statistical artifact inherent in measurements.[/sarcasm] LOL

I guess it is true what they say, "de-nile" is not just a river in Egypt.

I'm thinking that the 'superstrain' may be a self-correcting problem, working too quickly for transmission to spread as far by killing the hosts so quickly. It may well burn itself out if it works as described.

The superstrain may end up lowering the number of new cases of HIV... the big problem with HIV (other than that it kills you) is that its carriers stay alive and infectous for such a long time.

Either the behavior changes, or eventually there'll be no one alive who still indulges the behavior. Thus spake Darwin.

Good God-- I'm at a loss for words.

I guess I need to gather together a post of links about the new super-AIDS, and AIDS in general.

In the homosexual lifestyle, three months before symptoms show is time for hundreds of exposures. Seriously. It won't burn itself out, it will spread and become much more common, which is why there is such alarm. The index patient in NY reported sex with as many as 200 men before coming down with symptoms, after his presumed exposure at a crystal meth and sex party.

And stop and think--it's highly likely that someone at that party gave the resistant strain to him...

Can I ask a favor? It might be easier to just make a group of links to the superstrain news...

If it is supposed to provide relief to hundreds of thousands, shouldn't they have analyzed blood samples from more than just 10 people?
I didn't take stats in college, but that appears to be a very small sample.

That would be the case if it were like ebola, but a three-month lag time seems optimal to me in spreading the new variation.

Imagine if you had the flu for three months before showing symptoms but were contagious for that entire period.

I'm not taking this seriously, though, until his identified sex partners develop it also shortly. So far, we only have one case that we know of, and maybe it's just an unexplainable fluke.

That's a good idea-- of course, there is the little-appreciated keyword database that already exists... I shamefacedly admit I forget it's there, but here it is:

There's also a superstrain case or two on the west coast, iirc, not related to the NYC case. Probably arising spontaneously, possibly from people who have incorrectly used the current antiviral cocktail, or people who have ceased using it due to side effects.
