People in the News (Cheech & Chong)

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Cheech and Chong may have joked about marijuana in their movies, but the comedians say they didn't touch the stuff when the cameras were rolling.

"We tried one time and we wasted so much film," said Tommy Chong, recalling a scene in "Up in Smoke." "We were in the car waiting for the cue, you know. And the camera's rolling and we're sitting there, you know, and neither one of us heard the cue."

Chong and former partner Cheech Marin appeared together for the first time in 20 years at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival.

Chong said he isn't ashamed of introducing millions of Vietnam-era kids to marijuana. "When you think of how many kids died drinking alcohol, I feel I've saved millions of lives," he said.

Marin said their humor was appreciated by an unexpected group: "Cops were our biggest fans. Because they dealt in what we were dealing with everyday, but in reality... they saw the essential humor and they laughed."

Marin and Chong, who recently completed a nine-month sentence for trying to sell marijuana pipes on the Internet, said they are writing two new films, "Grumpy Old Stoners" and "Lord of the Smoke."

When did selling paraphernalia on the net become illegal?.

When the War On (non-government-approved) Drugs brigade thought they could get free publicity by locking up Tommy Chong.

What anyone does beyond my ability to smell is their own business.

If they are being prosecuted and jailed, somebody must be smelling it.

I think there was a pound of weed involved

Tommy Chong threads were all over FR when it happened.

I remember it being only an ounce...and they NEVER pressed charges for the pot, only the pipes!

Aw,man! Was that George on the guitar on BB Jones? Great licks!

"Where tonight we'll be watching the East Westchester Northern stars champions of the Southern conference against the Bloods from Rap City Memorial High School in Newark, New Jersey" ....from Basketball Jones. Still laugh at those guys.

I happened to be channel surfing a couple of years ago and they were together on a show called "Nash Bridges" - Don Johnson was with his partner from Miami Vice on the same show too.

Cheech was Don Johnson's partner on the series and Tommy Chong was playing a mob acountant, or some such, that was cooperating in a bust. Cheech and Chong went to a "Medical Marijuana Club" smoking room to bust one of the suspects, who was stoned out of his gourd. This resulted in one of my favorite lines on TV ever.

Cheech flashed his badge at the suspect and said something to the effect:

"step away from the bong and keep your hands where I can see them."

And yes, it was a classic episode.

"I feel SO much safer now!!"

Was he arrested because the bongs were dangerous? I thought he was arrested because the bongs were illegal.

I hope it wouldn't be preaching to the choir. I'd love to see Tommy Chong hit the talk show circuit, appearing on Hannity & Colmes, getting into Bill O'Reilley's face by making it onto "The Factor" (provided that O'Reilley doesn't "hide under his desk" & refuse to ask him to appear), & all the others to tell the folks what he's been through the last several months & make the case to making marijuana legal again.

I'm still trying to find their authority to make it illegal to begin with.

Has anyone else found the power to tell the people what they can posses or ingest in the Constitution?

No, they can't find this authority, regardless of what the Drug Warriors say--because it doesn't exist! The Constitution is VERY specific when it comes to naming the crimes that the federal government has the authority to punish...& the 10th Amendment leaves all other crime-fighting responsibilities to the states.

The federal government is BLATANTLY ignoring & violating the 9th Amendment by its persecution of medical marijuana users (& their doctors as well) in the states that have enacted its use under state law.
