Disease, unwanted import
washington times ^ | February 13, 2005 | Joyce Howard Price

Contagious diseases are entering the United States because of immigrants, illegal aliens, refugees and travelers, and World Health Organization officials say the worst could be yet to come.

In addition to a list of imported diseases that includes tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, hepatitis B, measles and the potentially deadly parasitic disease Chagas, officials fear what could happen if the avian flu, which is flourishing among poultry in Southeast Asia, mutates so that it is capable of human-to-human transmission through casual contact.

In 2002, he said, the federal government spent $2.5 billion to provide families of illegal immigrants with Medicaid and another $2.2 billion to provide medical treatment for uninsured illegals.

"State and local governments probably spent another $1.6 billion on top of that providing health insurance for illegal aliens," said Mr. Camarota, whose group analyzes Census Bureau data.

This is not our rightful burden to bear- but that cheap labor force is just so valuable...

Actually I would be a more likely person to bring a disease like avian flue to USA. I usually return to America from Asia to take care of some business and do my taxes in Early March -- often the peak of the season. With SARS, the Thai and other governments set up screening posts as people got off airplanes in Bangkok. When suspicians were arroused, people were admitted to containment wards and cared for and monitored.

It helped but only because the transmission of SARS requires close and often sustained contact. If SARS had spread as easily as normal flu, the whole plane load would have been at risk. At a minimum, when a flu or other illness is detected being passed from person to person, people should be screened before getting to the boarding area to get on the plane and vax records (if any) should be required. Also, the countries that do not adequatly control the birds or pigs or whatever should be cut off from foreign travel.

A pandemic can only be avoided if attacked close to the source and isolated.

It is likely that some of the Gators in My back yard will test positive for West Nile Virus.
I believe that tribalism is a natural defense against the spread of disease, lacking that instinct, or ignoring it, may be costly.

Maybe we should stop all tourism and business trips? Give me a break. The Washington Time keeps feeding wedge issues and the right fringe keeps eating it up. "See there...them illegals is making us all sick." Hey Joe buy a subscription.

It seems likely but, unfortunatly, fleas and rats don't have tribes or the Black Plague wouldn't have made it to Europe. If your chickens start dropping dead, it is probably not a good idea to feed them to the gators.

TB transmitted by cheap, illegal labor shows up in restaurants and spreads like wildfire.

Sorry, my cynicism is running high today: "Nobody gives a crap anymore".

Politicians and corporate indentured servant employers know there is another warm body on its way - in a truck - through the desert - under a train. No mattere how sick they get there's always a new one coming.

I have brought up testing new employees where I work, at the least, for TB. I am told that is a violation of their rights.

When does this disdain for the health and future for America end?

No! May be we should stop illegal immigration AND medically evaluate our new legal immigrants as in the past.

Like it or not, immigration (legal or otherwise) and travel are part of life. The U.S., being a rich country with a short memory, tends to forget that public health requires constant vigilence... and is one of those areas where even conservative libertarians have to admit it's the State's responsiblity to provide for it.

How clueless are you?

Nobody argues with legal immigration so why do you preface your remarks with, "like it or not?" The U.S. didn't forget that public health requires constant vigilance, it has chosen to ignore our public health laws in deference to the PC crowd.

It is a law here in the U.S. to provide employees to a safe and healthy work environment. The person that tells you that it is against their rights to test them for anything is either lying to you, doesn't know their own rights, too lazy to take it higher up, or doesn't want to fork out the money for testing. The law in the U.S. says that any company that wishes, can test any employee for whatever they may deem that might be harmful to other employees for their and others safety.

Better stock up on gator repellent!

If you somehow get a few gator bites, probably West Nile Virus is the least of your concerns. ;)

I get along fine with the Gators, but the Skeeters bite the Gators, and then want to bite Me. It seems to be a myth that bugs only bite warm blooded critters, I have photos of gnats and Skeeters on Frogs.

Where do you live? I grew up in FL, so I've been around gators all my life. Biggest ones I've ever see are in Okefenokee, about 18'.

From his profile page:

I don't believe we can solve the problem of illegal immigration by tightening the border and punishing businesses who hire illegals, and I sure don't think it will solve terrorism.

Bayourod must have a twin brother.

I've been in St.Augustine since 1947, where the Gators are smaller, but meaner and faster! Those old Okefenokee Gators never had to keep their tails out of reach of hungry Cracker Boys, lack of competition makes them fat, and slow. If I could figure out how to get a few St. Johns County Gators into the Noo Yawk sewer system, I suspect that town would get straightened out in a hurry!
I suppose We should run tests, to see if eating liberals will hurt the Gators, even though rotten Possums seem to work just fine! I am "Green" all the way, by the way, won't feed a Gator anything but what is good for it!
