Action Alert: Oppose H.R. 418 (national ID)

Action Alert:  Oppose H.R. 418 (national ID)

February 8, 2005

Are the terrorists winning?  When al-Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, they made it clear they hate America and want to terrorize us into changing America.

If they could, the terrorists would destroy the unique American way of life.  But they can't.  Only we can do that.

Tragically, too much of the legislation enacted by Congress in a knee-jerk reaction to 9/11 does al-Qaeda's job for them.  The Patriot Act took the first, disastrous step toward fundamentally changing our way of life.  Then came the homeland security bill, followed by the 9/11 intelligence reorganization bill.  And now the Real ID Act of 2005 (H.R. 418) will be voted on Thursday, February 10th.

What's wrong with H.R. 418 -- a bill we are told will stem the flow of illegal aliens through our porous borders?  For starters, it does NOTHING to stem the flow of illegal aliens.  Instead, H.R. 418 will:

1.  Establish a national ID card.
2.  Establish a federally-coordinated database of personal information on American citizens with Canada and Mexico.
3.  Use the new national ID to track American citizens when traveling outside the U.S. -- and within the U.S.
4.  Re-define "terrorism" in broad new terms that could include members of firearms rights and pro-life groups or other such groups as determined by whoever is in power at the time.
5.  Authorize the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to unilaterally expand the information included in driver's licenses, including such biometric information as retina scans and DNA information -- and even radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking technology.  Carry a driver’s license with RFID and governmental officials will know your whereabouts 24/7.

Incredibly, H.R. 418 does nothing to solve the growing threat to national security posed by people who are already in the U.S. illegally.  Instead, H.R. 418 states what we already know: that certain people here illegally are "deportable."  But it does nothing to mandate deportation.  H.R. 418 fails miserably on this most critical issue.

The Real ID Act or Real National ID Act will impose a Soviet-style internal passport on law-abiding American citizens.  Proponents of H.R. 418 say we must "make sacrifices" like this to control our borders and fight illegal immigration.  But H.R. 418 is a Trojan horse -- it pretends to offer desperately needed border control in order to stampede Americans into sacrificing what is uniquely American:  more of our constitutionally protected liberty.  H.R. 418 does what al-Qaeda could never do without our help.

H.R. 418 does what legislation restricting firearm ownership does.  It punishes law-abiding citizens.  Criminals will ignore it.  H.R. 418 offers us a false sense of greater security at the cost of taking a gigantic step toward making America a police state.  The terrorists will have won.

Urge your U.S. representative to vote "no" on H.R. 418.  Go to http://capwiz.com/liberty/issues/alert/?alertid=6938731&type=CO

An RFID does not have any power.
It has an antenna that picks up micro wave power from a source and broad casts information in a read only memory.

You are right, and I do not know if this resolution addresses the issue of requiring ID to be presented when voting.

Even if it does not, I do not think there is validity to the argument that the legislation is unconstitutional.

And I support it because I believe it will make identification more reliable which is a good preventative measure against crime.

As far as voting, I think we need a federal law that requires voters to EITHER present a photo ID meeting federal standards OR be fingerprinted when voting. The law should also provide for federal criminal penalties for voter fraud with a system in place to investigate it. This will prevent voters from being disenfranchised by not being allowed to vote or by having their vote diluted by unauthorized voting.

I found a neat site that tells you how to create ball lightening in a microwave.

And do you know what type of gas is produced if you microwave CDs? (don't do it, it's poisonous)

And I thought Sensenbrenner was one of the good guys.

You're kidding, right? Sensenbrenner is an anti-gun RINO. Back in the 1980's he always voted with Lautenberg and Howard Metezbaum (the equivalent of Schumer/Feinstein today).

Nope, I didn't know, thanks for the info. Just started to hear about him recently and thought he was anti "illegal" immigration and one of the "good" guys.

We all already have a SS card, and driver's licenses. But the other three,

The Republican party won't go for it. Right?

Of course not. They're the party of smaller government. 8-D

Read the bill, too. While it does establish minimum ID standards for acceptance by federal agencies, it does not literally require everyone to have it. In fact, it appears to take into account that some people may not like the federal standards, so as long as he does not do business with federal agencies, he does not have to have the de facto National ID. IOW, the states can issue non-compliant drivers licenses, if they so chose. Now, as to how many states will choose to do so, I have no idea...

Does it forbid only when Congress does not give its consent?

As of the drafting, yes, but has been amended.
The point is, the second amendment affirms your right to protect your family, property, state and country. Its our resposibility first.

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing [sic] Senators...

What do you think the odd are this would actually be used to prevent election fraud? Nil.

This isn't about finding and expelling illegals, or keeping them out of polling places. This is about bagging and tagging the sheeple.

All this bill will do is create a federal database for tracking drivers' licenses and make sure future Mohammed Attas can't get one to drive around to commit mayhem.

If Atta's visa had been checked at at least one traffic stop, he would not have been here for 9/11.

This isn't about keeping us safe. It is about keeping government goons safe from us.

You know what the number one cause of paranoia is ...?

Feelings of guilt.

;>) Just kidding. But seriously...

I don't really think conservatives are out to get anyone, and even most liberals are merely conspiring to gain personal power, wealth, fame and influence. Most of them are not really thinking "Hmmmm, how can I lay the foundation for a tyrant to take over when my grandchildren are grown". It doesn't work like that (with a few exceptions perhaps).

Our biggest threats are from ideology rather than the method of governing. The methodology becomes a problem as a result.

This legislation does a lot more to stop abuse than it does to create potential abuses.

The best way to prevent tyranny is to exercise our freedoms without abusing them.

The best way to exercise our freedom is to monkeywrench a government goon. Make their lives miserable. Break their morale. Government is NOT our friend.

A Republican is someone who wants to return government to pre New Deal size and scope.

A Nazi is someone who is enthusiastic about control and intrusion.

I am a Republican. You fit the description of a Nazi.

Nazis are also notorious for sexual fetishes related to their obsessions with power and control. It isn't a far reach to think your taste for jackboot leather on your tongue is such a fetish.
