I guess we have different definitions of courage and heart.

I agree.
I think people who live in pain and/or are crippled and yet live life to the fullest show true courage.
Reeves was a very brave man who fought to the last.

This is my problem with Euthanasia
In the Netherlands Euthanasia is legal.
By Legalizing Euthanasia, the Netherlands has opened up "the flood gates."
Last year 22 babies were Euthanised because they had "incurable diseases." One of the diseases mentioned was Spinal Bfida.
People with Spinal Bfida may not be able to walk, but they are alive as you or me. I don't think that those doctors had a right to kill those babies.
Maybe you think, well I wouldn't be for Euthanising babies. But somehow a doctor was still able to stick a needle into a little baby's arm because someone said that that child would suffer so much, we might as well put him out of his misery.
How about the elderly?
In Netherlands in many Nursing homes, There has been some controversy over whether or not doctors have taken it upon themselves to Euthanise the elderly without being asked to. It has become common place for elderly men and women to walk around with Papers basically saying "Do NOT Euthanize."
As for someone like Maggie, was her life really not worth anything where she should just Die? Death is the end of everything. It is the final answer.
The question here is "Who decides who lives and who dies" and "What qualifications are there to be Euthanised"
Some people are physically healthy and suffer from emotional disorders such as Depression. If that individual wants to be Euthanised should he or she be?
What about a a depressed Elderly man? He is of no use to society, all he does is collect Social Security. What if he is so miserable he wants to die. Should he be Euthanised?
People like you and me look at abortion here, and we think "What has happened to the sanctity of life?"
"Why do people not respect life" "When did a baby become a clump of cells?"
Well, when does an elderly person become a "drain on society"
Ultimately, I feel we should leave Euthanasia up to God. It is not for us to decide who lives and who dies.

""I suppose if you're a superficial asshole, you'd think it was a movie ABOUT euthanasia.""
Well Hildy,
I guess I'm a superficial asshole.
I respect your opinion, I would appreciate it if you respected mine.
That's a hateful and hurtful thing to say to someone.

I feel we can learn alot from experiance.
We aren't in Nazi Germany either, that doesn't mean we cannot learn from their mistakes.

OK Lauralee, I just saw your profile. YOU'RE 18 years old? I've just wasted a couple of hours of my life. I'll debate this with you when you're in your 40's, ok?

Alright, how about Stalin?
Before Stalin threw people in concentration camps, he took away their guns.
What about the SS system? Chile's privatization has been very successful.
We learn from other's mistakes.

Actually, I shouldn't be so harsh. You're a very good debater for your age. And you're passionate, as you should be. But there are things you learn as you age. I hope you don't learn them the hard way and I hope you stay as passionate as you are now.

#22..Ya know what.
I really didn't like that movie.
She had her fast fling.....for what?
Her husband and children seemed kind and caring....
..but I felt her husband knew after the fact, regardless of her 'sacrifice' in staying with him.
And then....what a legacy for the children....
..they get to read all about it in her letters.....oh thrill....(sarcasm)

Please don't. It makes a lot of us happy to see young Freepers on the board.
Don't let them get you down.
Hey, I'm in the National Guard and am looking at getting deployed (cool!). I ride a motorcycle, usta jump out of airplanes, boxed and generally enjoy a lot of high-risk stuff. I shudder to think of some close calls....
The idea of getting maimed, broken and/or paralyzed is not an academic one to me.
I've considered it at length. It would be bad, but not the end of my world. Heck, I'd keep living 'cuz it still beats the alternative.
It's just that we are so comfortable now, at this time and place, that comfort is more important than life to a lot of people.

Everyone focuses on the big "denoument" of the character turning out to be a transexual. The work by Forrest Whittiker is top notch and Stephen Rae is amazing in that movie. I hate how really great movies get dismissed and summed up by one scene. I find almost everyone who talks about that movie has no clue what it was about. Its probably in my top 20, along with Kiss of the Spiderwoman, with Raul Julia and William Hurt, which also deals with homosexuals. My Beautiful Launderette is another.

Directed by Stephen Frears (Hi Fidelity, Dangerous Liasons) and starring Daniel Day Lewis (Last of the Mohicans, My Left Foot). Here's a refresher :)
