The Humanist Mission of Our Schools.
I think the most important factor leading us to a
secular society has been the educational factor. Our
schools may not teach Johnny to read properly, but the
fact that Johnny is in school until he is 16 tends to
lead toward the elimination of religious superstition.
The average child now acquires a high school education,
and this militates against Adam and Eve and all other
myths of alleged history.
Humanist writer Paul Blanshard.
Extending State Control.
Humanists know that the future of our country rests
with our children. Therefore, in order to control the
future of our country, they must control the minds of
our children. And the easiest way to control our
children is to control the schools.
Radical left-wing writers, including Alexander Cockburn
and James Ridgeway, incessantly rail against
parental "interference" in schools, because, as they
openly acknowledge, "The Left can't survive politically
without a public school system to spread leftist
attitudes."[3]
The New Curriculum.
The future of any nation lies with its youth. So
corrupt them; since religion teaches moral virtue,
erode the churches and divert the young from religion.
Make them interested only in themselves. Get them
involved in drugs, alcohol, and sex. Get them addicted
to privileges and rights.
Vladimir Lenin's "Rule for Revolution" #1.
"Reading, writing and arithmetic" no longer figure
prominently in today's exotic public school curricula.
Children who attend public school will be compelled to
learn the following;
that homosexuality is a perfectly acceptable
alternative lifestyle;
.....SNIP......

"Wow, so you purposely insult every public school teacher on this forum?"
There seems to be a lot of that in this thread?
"Why doesn't every parent.....or go to school board meetings, etc"
That was my question but some would rather homeschool and the rest is somebody elses problem even though their paying for the system.
Some say it's too corrupt and just gave up.
Kinda like Dems....to all your positive suggestions it's no no no no. LOL
"My kids graduated and are doing quite well thank you very much."
Same here. People are broad brushing the whole system for the few that are bad.
"We mustn't chastise homeschoolers as hiding."
Nothing wrong with homeschooling. It's homeschooling and then not participating in the public school system which is taking their money to, in some cases, use it for a flawed system.
Sitting at home on FR bitc*ing about doesn't solve the problems. Hence, I'll hide my kid at home, you take my tax money and spend it anyway you want and I'll complain to people who can do nothing about it. LOL
"School" and "education" can be two different things entirely.
"It is a tax for the good of society."
Bingo
Which, makes the idea that "some people have"...that they can insulate their children from society if they homeschool a silly one.
At some point those kids have to go out into society and confront the kids that were educated by a system they deplore. Schools are a microcosm of society. People curse, they talk about sex, there are perverts, there are homosexuals and others that aren't perceived as the best of society.
Like it or not schools have to deal with those issues. If people don't like the way a school is dealing with it change it.
"I wouldn't say those in the business world necessarily have the best ethics"
Errr, it was about the ability of new employees to write and speak well, not ethics.
I would also point out that just because there are some in business who aren't the paragon of ethics doesn't mean they all are bad anymore than to say all teachers and schools are bad. :-)
TROLLS
""School" and "education" can be two different things entirely."
This is true. What is the purpose of a school?
Dave, you are indeed useful for some things I suppose. :-)
At one time, schools imparted academic knowledge. Frankly, I think public schools have lost their way in that regard.
What do you think the purpose of school is today?
"What do you think the purpose of school is today?"
Based on my experience, having spoken to many teachers, and what I read, it's still to educate.
Don't know about where you live but my kids took reading, writing, math, science, history, several times over.........you know, the usual.
That's nice.
"Now government and bureaucracies far removed from the local scene make all the decisions, and parents have no say."
Not so fast...
"During his first legislative session, Governor Bush successfully worked....providing local control of schools."
If decisions aren't at the local level, change it.
