Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - Stage and screen actor Ron Silver, in Washington for President Bush's State of the Union address Wednesday night, credited left-wing celebrities -- particularly filmmaker Michael Moore -- with helping to re-elect George W. Bush.
"The celebrity backlash helped," Silver said. "Michael Moore, I think, was a big factor --a really big factor," Silver told Cybercast News Service in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, following Bush's speech.
Silver's acting credits include the television series "The West Wing," and "Chicago Hope" as well as the movie "Reversal of Fortune." He also is a co-founder of the Creative Coalition, a social and political advocacy organization of the (generally liberal) entertainment industry, and he has stood out in Hollywood for supporting the war in Iraq.
"The attention paid to [Moore] -- the lionization of his piece of propaganda (the anti-Bush movie "Fahrenheit 911") -- I think it all kind of backfired," Silver said.
Silver, a former Democrat, was responding to a question about a billboard campaign in Hollywood sponsored by the conservative group Citizens United that is thanking celebrities for helping to re-elect Bush.
One billboard displays an image of President Bush juxtaposed against the images of several celebrities, including Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Barbra Streisand with the text: "4 More Years. Thank You Hollywood!"

Everything changed for Silver after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Now he calls himself a "9/12 Republican." A strong supporter of Israel and the war in Iraq, Silver spoke at the Republican National Convention in New York and is featured prominently in a new documentary, "FahrenHYPE 9/11," a searing indictment of Michael Moore's blockbuster film.
Silver says his political change of heart and outspoken support of President Bush has exacted a high professional cost in Hollywood, where Republicans are a decidedly rare breed.
If Michael Morre were set adrift in space comets would start orbiting him.
It's all about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Perhaps Mikey Moore is really a twisted Rovian plant who actually supports GWB, but somehow new that his pro-lefty actions and activities would in actuality move the momentum to the Right.
Naw.........
Yep, he has even stated as much in interviews, one on Hannity and Colmes in particular.
Unless I'm mistaken, Silver is not a former democrat.
The way I read that, grellis is claiming that Silver is not a former 'Rat. That could be interpreted many ways I guess. Silver could have been an independant, or he could still be a 'Rat, he just supports Bush on the WOT. Whatever.
"Howard Dean is a doctor and understands what it takes to care for America's physical and health needs. If we have him as chairperson of the Democratic Party, I think that we will have a strong vibrant Democratic Party," Jackson Lee said.
Howard Dean is a doctor, alright. So is Jack Kevorkian. So were the fictional Hannibel Lector and Baron Henry Frankenstein. I wonder which one Dean will be for the 'Rat party?
Heck, I always did like Ron Silver. He is an honorable man, a patriot who puts America's safety and interests above his political party. Like Zell Miller and Ed Koch, Silver knows that protecting America against the Islamic jihadist threat is a far more important cause to pursue than any domestic policy, and he put aside differences with the President on most social policy issues to vote for the man who would better defend his nation against all enemies (A President's first and foremost duty in the U.S. Constitution).
Always underrated as an actor, His convincing performance in Reversal of Fortune is one of my favorites from the last 20 years. Robbed of an Oscar nomination for said performance (though co-star Jeremy Irons won Best Actor that year), Silver demonstrated his talent by making an annoying weasel like Alan Dershowitz SEEM not only sympathetic and forthright but almost heroic, though Dershowitz was defending a man who might have been an attempted murderer in the particular story portrayed in the movie (the Claus Von Bulow case from the '80's).
In response to whether he should have made the War into a political issue, "Shortly before Willkie died, he told a friend, that if he could write his own epitaph and had to choose between "here lies a president" or "here lies one who contributed to saving freedom," he would prefer the latter. Eleanor Roosevelt in her October 12, 1944 My Day column eulogized Willkie as a "man of courage.... (whose) outspoken opinions on race relations were among his great contributions to the thinking of the world." She concluded, "Americans tend to forget the names of the men who lost their bid for the presidency. Willkie proved the exception to this rule."
My money's on Doctor Frankenstein. Making the dead live again (if only to vote) is definitely on their program.
lovelovelove this!
Thanks Bulldog and Centaurian - mabbe it'll rain this weekend and I can skin 'em up...
But I think we do ourselves (and our ideas) a bit of a disservice if we give too much emphasis to things lie "celebrity backlash"
We should never forget that our ideas prevailed. Our ideas for a safer America that fights against terrorism, rather than simply cowering and hoping it goes away.
All before 911.
The last donation was in 2000. In 2000, I voted for Gore. I'm not the same person I was then. Maybe he changed like I did.
Right. All before 9-11, like me.
Kudos to you. And Ed Koch, Zell Miller and other honest 'Rats who have put partisan/domestic politics on the back burner until the jihadists are destroyed.
A. I am not flaming you.
B. Can you, in any way, explain to me how you could vote for Gore? I find it incomprehensible that any rational person would.
C. I was not flaming you.

MM goes all around the world telling everyone how dumb Americans are and the Democrats ... invite him to their national convention.
Did they think Americans didn't notice?
