STATE OF THE UNION -- 2005 [Live Thread]
2/2/05

Posted on 02/02/2005 3:43:44 PM PST by Timeout

The pre-spin: Bush will spend about 1/2 the speech on foreign policy, 1/2 on domestic, with heavy emphasis on Social Security reform. It's said he will provide a detailed tutorial on the SS system and its problems with a few details on his personal accounts proposal.

Laura's guests are said to be an Afghan voter and an Iraqi voter (too bad there's no Ukrainian wearing an orange hat!).

Should we start a drinking game on how many times the pool camera swings to Hillary? Hmmm. Probably not...it would likely hamper out typing ability.

Word on the blogs has it that the closing part of the speech is a hum-dinger. Set your VCR's.

Report here on outrageous MediaCrat spin before AND after the SOTU. Pictures and screen caps welcome.

Hey, punk, we're ALL been working since we were 16, some of us earlier.

Pardon me, but where did I use a personal insult when referring to you? Did I miss something? If "fixing" social security means screwing those of us who have paid into the system our entire lives without an option out of any benefit, then let the system die and replace it with welfare.

Let us all go back in time for a moment to the debates. Now come back to the present. HOW SWEET IT IS!!!!

Don't let's forget that - especially in the first debate - frenchi was throwing out things that he had no right to - national security things that he knew the president couldn't answer because of security issues. Real dirty pool...

If the Saudis don't establish a free society in their country we will support those who do want one.

Correct

The Saudi people find themselves between the rock of Saudi tyranny and the hard place of Saudi wahabbism. Offering the thrid way is the answer.

Thanks NVA. It's not the we're sensitive, it's just that we'd like to add 55 votes to the electoral college and maybe a couple of pub Senators. Bush lost CA by 6%...six freeking percentage points! If we had more support from some of the other red states we could do it. Instead we often get derision and nasty comments from people who just love to pile on CA.

It makes them feel good, but how is that helping he cause?

How many Iraqis died in this fight for their own freedom?

From my understanding very few. Even our own troops complained they were not supported by the majority of the people.

How many Iraqi soldiers and police officers have been killed in the line of duty? How many innocent men, women and children have been blown up by terrorist bombs??

Lots of people get blown up by suicided bombers, however this does not address what I stated. I stated that overall, the majority of Iraqis, (not all) stood on the sidelines watching us fight their fight from the time we rolled in. I think this has been pretty well established. There are even reports from our own military that stated some of the few that were trained by us actually ran away from, or decide not to fight when things got tough. Again, this has been pretty well documented.

The President stated the Iraqis have earned our respect. I would say this is a little premature. Once we leave, when ever that may be, it will be interesting to see if they can hold this thing together, and hang tough, spilling their own blood to keep this freedom. Only when that happens will they gain some respect from me.

The reality now is, the Iraqis should be thanking us, and showing some big time respect for *us*.

She was all right - not great - in my book. And then early Jan she wrote a pep piece for the democrats http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=110006120. And of course later, her Way Too Much God hit piece on the Inauguration speech which you are familiar with. That said, this is the President's night - not a night to speak of Nonoon whom I suspect is one of the Beast's new writers.

...and so long, voters in the red states of North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, etc. Face it Karl, Amtrak is a much better deal than what we've shelled out for the airlines, airports, and debacles like the Big Dig...

"Supply and demand involves the number of available bodies."

That's union socialists thinking where everyone is just a mathematical unit, where everyone has the exact same value and the only way a man can demand more for his labor is if he can eliminate competition from all the other units.

Employers don't care how many "bodies" are out there. The owner of a collision shop wants the best bodymen he can get and he will pay what he can afford to get someone who can take a brand new car from a dealership, repaint it a more popular color and return it to the dealership in such perfect condition that the dealership can sell it without the buyer ever knowing that it wasn't a factory paint job. He doesn't care how many "units" are out there mowing lawns.

A construction roofing contractor has deadlines to meet and needs experienced, skilled, dependable roofers who can keep up with the builders' schedule. He doesn't care how many "units" of landfill workers are out there.

There are very few jobs where skill and experience aren't important, and for those we have minimum wage laws.

Ya know, I just realized, he said nothing about the tsunami.

I'm not saying he should, but just imagine Clinton...he would've made that the centerpiece of his SOTU. I suspect it took a lot of message discipline to leave it out.
