STATE OF THE UNION -- 2005 [Live Thread]
2/2/05

The pre-spin: Bush will spend about 1/2 the speech on foreign policy, 1/2 on domestic, with heavy emphasis on Social Security reform. It's said he will provide a detailed tutorial on the SS system and its problems with a few details on his personal accounts proposal.
Laura's guests are said to be an Afghan voter and an Iraqi voter (too bad there's no Ukrainian wearing an orange hat!).
Should we start a drinking game on how many times the pool camera swings to Hillary? Hmmm. Probably not...it would likely hamper out typing ability.
Word on the blogs has it that the closing part of the speech is a hum-dinger. Set your VCR's.
Report here on outrageous MediaCrat spin before AND after the SOTU. Pictures and screen caps welcome.

"So who is next Syria or Iran?"
The President, with his reference of the Syrian legilation passed by Congress, basically but Damascus on notice that WE know that THEY have and support terrorist activities in the region and that the actions will not be tolerated. I would not be the least bit surprised to learn of air strikes and perhaps some boots going in to take out these facilities. The Syrian military would be a minimal threat to our forces.
Meanwhile, the President told the Iranian people - for the 2nd time in as many weeks - that America will stand with them when they take action. This IMHO means the promise of diplomatic, economic and even military assistance if they decide to rise up and overthrow the mullahs. Unlike Syria, the Iranian people seem to want to embrace democracy now. And, a new gov't in Iran would take the heat off of the nuclear issue. But make no mistake about it - the US will simply not allow the existing Iranian government to possess a nuclear weapon. Period.
So, to answer your question, Syria is first...

OMG Ronnie and Mathews think the mother giving her son's dog tags to the Iraqi woman was contrived and planned by the Bush folks. Is there no limit to what they will do? Even Campbell Brown admonished them and said it was obviously spontaneous because the chain caught on a button on her sleeve. sssssssssssssh

Nancy's brother, Tommy D'Alesandro, III, did become Mayor after his father held the job. Your memory is correct. Young Tommy had a rape charge dropped when the witness declined to testify. Later, he had a bribery charge dropped when the man who paid the bribe mysteriously disappeared. (He turned up after the charges were dropped, in a mobbed up casino in Las Vegas.)
Fine family, the D'Alesandros.

OMG ... Harry say today is Ground Hogs Day and that this speech was like the movie OK, I just read this out to my husband because we can't stand to actually watch the dem response. He laughed and said the movie had a happy ending.

I don't watch Matthews anymore but....I do listen to Laura Ingraham. She played clips of Matthews comments during NBC's Iraqi election coverage.
Matthews was complaining that someone had this dumb idea of putting blue ink on voter's fingers. He kept screeching 'WHO'S BRIGHT IDEA WAS MARKING THESE PEOPLE". He thought the Iraqi voters would want to run and hide after voting.
Hello, earth to Matthews!

I don't think he meant it in a derogatory way. Bush communicates best when he speaks in simple, declarative sentences. I think Krauthammer was saying it wasn't flowery rhetoric that sounds good but means nothing. I was a little taken aback by Charles' 'pedestrian' comment too. I think 'down to earth' would be a better description. The President was setting his agenda, no question about it, and he did it BEAUTIFULLY.

Somebody tell little Ron to SHUT UP. Was Chrissy just saying that when the Iraqi lady hugged Mrs. Norwood that it could have been a set-up, i.e. just for the cameras??? Did I just hear that?

I want DNA testing to prove Ron the lesser is really Reagan's son! I've said that, too! He looks nothing like President Reagan. If anything, he looks too much like Nancy.

Pelosi ... she ends her attack with "May God continue to bless America"... Pelosi's logic tonight was straight out of the nuthouse.
For example, she claims that all the world's terrorists are now in Iraq, and therefor we should leave Iraq.
THEN she claims that her terror fighting plan would be better than President Bush's.
HOW THE FREAK WOULD we fight terror better if our US forces were to leave the exact place where all the terrorists are hiding!!

Now Ronnie is whining about stem cell research and Christopher Reed!
He is the one scoring even more pain for political points for his cause.
