Iraq Group Says Holds U.S. Soldier - Web (GI Joe doll?)
Reuters ^ | 2/1/05 | Reuters

DUBAI (Reuters) - A little-known Iraqi insurgent group said on Tuesday it was holding a U.S. soldier and threatened to kill him within 72 hours if Iraqi prisoners were not released, according to an Internet statement.

"Our mujahideen ... have managed to capture the American soldier John Adam after killing a number of his colleagues," said the Mujahideen Squadrons in the undated statement.

It carried a picture appearing to show a U.S. soldier sitting in front of a black banner with a rifle pointed at his head. The authenticity of the claim, which did not say where the man was seized, could not be verified.

"We will cut his throat in 72 hours if our male and female prisoners in the occupation jails are not released," it said.

A group using the same name, Mujahideen Squadrons, last month claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of a Brazilian engineer in Iraq (news - web sites).

Insurgents in Iraq, including al Qaeda's wing in Iraq, have been waging attacks on U.S.-led forces since they invaded the country in 2003.

but think what they could do to Barbie.

A long time ago, probably when you were young, and before Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase and some of those guys who ended up writing for SNL made a movie called The Groove Tube

One part was a skit with Ken and Barbie that I've never been able to get out of my mind; the chant went like this:

Everybody said their marriage was a failure
Because neither Ken or Barbie had any genitalia

I think we can rule out sexual assault. :-)

"Little did you know, huh?"

I'm still trying to figure out why reuters edited their release of the story to exclude "the giveaway" part of the goblin statement. Could it be that they wanted it to be true, or that they wanted to start some kind of snowball here?

Flagrant dishonesty is unbecoming of a wire service.

There's a big mess out there in Newsland that needs to be cleaned up:

330 of them so far.

Found this in a WP story:

"Liam Cusack, of the toy manufacturer Dragon Models USA, inc., said the image of the soldier portrayed in the photo bore a striking resemblance to a military action figure made by the company."

That's verbatim posting of wires on most of those links. I suppose that no one investigates anymore?

I'm not naive, just hopeful.

Implant it in or near their carotid artery to make it pretty much impossible to remove. It could be easily activated by flying an airplane with a powerful transmitter beaming out a digitally encoded instruction over a wide area.

Of course it is. That is why there are no pics of the "brave doll hunters" posing with their "captive".

I have a large barbie and ken collection. It sure looks like GI Joe to me. Same flak jacket, same facial expression. They've said nobody is missing on another thread. They can enhance the photo and determine if the soldier in the picture is actually a vinyl replica.

This combination shows an image, left, posted on an Iraqi militant Web site on Tuesday Feb. 1, 2005 and an image provided by toy manufacturer Dragon Models USA of an action figure named ' Cody' in a box. The Web site posted the photograph of what it claimed was a kidnapped U.S. soldier, but doubts were quickly raised about its authenticity and the U.S. military said no soldiers were missing. Dragon Models USA, said the figure in the photo resembled one of its military action figures originally produced for sale at U.S. bases in Kuwait. (AP Photo/Dragon Models USA, HO)
