RICHMOND, Jan. 17 -- The metal detector just inside the doors of Virginia's General Assembly Building let out a shriek Monday as Stafford resident Bruce Jackson strode through.
That was not at all surprising, since Jackson was wearing a loaded .45-caliber handgun under his blazer. On the other side of the gate, a uniformed Capitol Police officer examined his driver's license, then his concealed handgun permit, had a quick word and waved him along.
The routine took only a few moments, but for Jackson and other members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, it required one step too many.

I personally appreciate the good work beinbg done by this group and others throughout all 50 states. If I understand Virginia's law correctly, open carry requires only that a person not be a felon, but concealed carry requires a permit which involves obtaining approval from a judge, which I think is a problem. In Tennessee, we are issued "carry permits" PERIOD under which "open" or "concealed" carry is our choice and no judge is involved - just a training class and a background check. I prefer concealed carry because I don't want to be the first person the bad guy decides to take out if he's determined to commit a crime.
Anyway, it seems that under Virginia's law folks who don't want to subject themselves to the whims of some judge in order to be issued a concealed carry permit have no choice but to carry openly. And judges are notoriously whimsical. I think I remember that Oliver North was denied a concealed carry permit.
I do. I want everyone to know they can count on me for help if they need it.
We need Nationalized Open Carry.
If we didn't have a bunch of weasels on the supreme court, this would already have happened.
